I think the video is well made. The guy loves to hear his own voice and draw diagram
But as far as technical explanations, he leaves out information that would draw a different picture. He makes it sound like BMW discovered variable valve timing for the first time with the 1250, while the the truth is that VANOS was introduced in their cars in 1992. That does not make BMW unique in the engine world, but certainly not imbeciles either.
The shift cam approach is actually a 'first'. Most of the systems out there are merely changing the faze for the valve timing, whereas shiftcam changes the timing as well as the opening of the valves as they use two lobes. There are certainly more advanced systems out there, though they are used in cars only. Even BMW uses a much more advanced system in their cars. But introducing it to the boxer would imply a wider engine. Given that the very simple shift cam system already makes the engine a leader in torque vs cc, it would seem lika a waste to introduce a more complicated system.
What about the competition? Ducati uses a fairly advanced system, but it is still merely a faze changer. The Suszuki system is a simpler design, where the change in faze is a function of rpm only, it does not compensate for engine load. But it's still an improvement over nothing. The Ducati 1260 delivers 129 NM, BMW 1250 offers 143, and with a much simpler system.
The key advantage to the shift cam is that it does not make the engine any wider, the system is technically less complicated than any system from the competition, and if it fails the rider will only notice a minor degradation in performance. It's merely one shaft sliding axially less than 20mm over the inner-shaft, and the actuators are two solenoid driven plungers. A solenoid is a well proven device. You find it in lots of home appliances, and you find them in your car. Soienoids hardly ever fails. Putting two of them in the top of an engine is no big deal.
As for the Koenigsegg solution, I find it damn clever and will offer the best performance to any engine. But even a minor hick-up will leave the engine dead. The system is not well proven, and I'm not sure that KE will even sell the rights of using it.
Anyway, back to the video.
I consider it as well made entertainment, not a lesson in technology, and I suspect that was the intention by the producer as well![]()

So, a You Tube motorcycle commentator doesn't give a glowing review to a motorcycle that I personally bought and really like?
I shrug my shoulders.![]()
Well I like the look of the red and white one, didn’t realise they had updated the v strom
"A few"I'm a tosser but I'm not upset. Do I get a refund?

Anyone that says the VStrom 1000 or 1050 has inferior build quality to a GS needs to go and look at/ride one close up. The fit and finish is not in the same bracket as Suzukis that had a (well-deserved) reputation for poor build quality. FWIW I had a GSX1250FA for a couple of years. It was faultless, had the slickest gearbox out there that would embarrass any BMW and the engine paint and general build quality was on a par with anything else - and that engine had peak torque below 4,000rpm so had very serious shove, and it was only let down by slightly wooden brakes. Styling and blandness comments aside the VStroms are well built, well thought-out and rock solid reliable. Speak to any genuine owners too - they’re far from bland. Given price reductions you seem to be able to get without much effort the price difference is closer to £7-8K. That’s a huge difference. Personally, having owned a few 1200GS’es (and having done a couple of long test rides on the 1250) I decided the boxer engine is not for me (plus commuting into London is a no-no on a 1200/1250 due to thieving scrotes). I take the video as being tongue in cheek - everyone raves that the 1250 is the best bike in the world and can do no wrong - but there are other bikes out there, so you pays you money and takes your choice.

Presence on the road ? WTF is that all about ?
A Hummer has presence but I wouldn’t want to drive one.
Listen, i know your thick as fuck, but im not going to explain myself to you. So do me a favour fuckwit, take a long walk along a short pier would you ?
Your more to be pity'd than scolded. You must like me, the way you troll about after me on here. Im not a fudge packer like you, so kindly go troll elsewhere.
I wasn’t trolling,I was asking you a genuine question which you cannot seem to answer.
What is this ‘presence’ thing you talk about ?
Is it like having 20 spot lights and a POLITE vest ?
Go on, I dare you to actually answer rather than just ducking the question....
Presence to me means a high upright riding position allowing cage drivers so see you more and earlier than they would if you were riding a 200mph crotch rocket. Thats my idea of presence. So i have now explained it to you, are you happy
Probably not
but hey ho, happy lockdown.I've no idea about wearing a 'Polite' hiviz vest as i wouldnt be seen dead in one of them, and anyone who wears one is a total and utter wanker AFAIC As for 20 spotlights, think your on the wrong pages for that, go find yourself a forum that is full of 'Mods' with their scooters, and that is where you will find that. I may well have a couple of extra lights on my steed, but thats for safety reasons, they will allow me to see deer on the road in the dark,i have literally thousands of acres of trees around this area and most are crammed full of the blighters, i think you will find that a perfectly plausable explanation for them being fitted.Presence to me means a high upright riding position allowing cage drivers so see you more and earlier than they would if you were riding a 200mph crotch rocket.
