Having just had my fuel sender replaced I took a trip to the local petrol station to fill her back up again ...

Hitting 30 litres, with fuel still going in the next thing I know the tank has decided to dump the entire contents over my slightly warm engine with me still sat on the bike ... :blast

Thinking I was about to witnesses my own cremation I managed to scramble off the pumps with bike in tow and still pouring out fuel ...

Following recovery back to the dealer I was advised that the seal for the sender unit had't seated properly ....
As the issue was promptly resolved so I wont name the dealer on here ...

I still struggle to understand how it managed to dump the entire tank of the fuel out the top part of the tank, I actually saw it pouring out around the left sender/pump lock ring? and no the ignition wasn't on ...
Any thoughts??

Oh sorry again to the staff at the BP who were frantically running around & closed the station for nearly an hour .. :augie

A mate of mine warned me about sitting on a bike whilst filling up. Makes sense to be able to run away quickly if things go quickly wrong.

Glad you survived. Hope the dealer reimbursed your fuel costs.

I hope they paid for the fuel that was spread over the forecourt, and BP's clean up costs.

I knew there was a reason for not sitting on the bike when I fuelled it up!

When I did my bike training years ago, the instructor insisted that we dismount when topping up for that very reason.

You have to get off anyway to pay for the stuff at the kiosk.:nenau

Take a tank of petrol and throw it on a really hot engine, and all it'll do is fizz and boil off fast.

Just ask Rob Farmer :D

If you spill petrol on a hot engine, all it will do is evaporate REALLY quickly. Brake fluid on a hot exhaust will burst into flames.

And I have to ask WHY were you sat on the bike?? If you need it upright to fill it, why not use the centre stand??

got distracted one time at a petrol station , ill admit i might have been lookin at a girl bending over at the passenger door of her car looking for her purse :bounce1

the cut out on the pump didnt work, and i poured petrol all over the bike and myself, bike was red hot coming into the station, and all i could think as i was soaked from the waist down in petrol, was that monk that was on the rage against the machine album cover.

i know from that experence that the petrol evaporated off the engine,, but i get off the bike filling up now just in case !!

Whilst filling a bike:
- never sit on it
- dont stand between the pump and bike

Takes seconds to use centre stand and walk round.

Cold petrol can cause nasty burns if left on the skin for any length of time - why risk dumping a load in your lap by sitting on the bike - your only choice if it happens is to strip naked on the garage forecourt and give you bollox a good house down!

It's what the sports bike riders do cos they don't have a centre stand (and their tank range is pathetic so they need every drop).

Let's ALL copy them cos they look SO cool, while we're at it let's all wear rucksacs, they must be really useful to rip our limbs off when a "win or die" piece of cornering goes wrong.

Have you noticed all the baby talk that emits from these morons? "Gixxer" "double bubble screen" to name just two!

(off to the nuclear shelter)

If I fill the bike up while sat on it, I always swing down the sidestand. That way, if it goes pear-shaped, I have the option of diving to the left. What's the problem?

... and, dropping the bike onto the side stand, getting off, raising it onto the centre stand to fill up ....... gives you enough time to find some tw&t has spilt diesel all over the forecourt and you're sliding around in it .... with a much lighter bike than it's going to be in approximately 4.5 minutes time :blast

Overflowing petrol all over yer troose is enough problem for me.

For the sake of swinging my leg off the bike its not worth the risk. Anyway, pumping fuel will staying on the bike is no easier so what's the point?

I was ones in Italy at a petrol station , self service in the middle off the night .
I put my bike on the side stand because I only wanted to fill up a little so I put €20 off petrol , then I thought I will put the pump nozzle back then I will close the filler cup , Some how my bike went off the side stand and end up with the fuel pump on the right hand and the bike in the left hand side for about 10 minutes but I didn't let go off the bike :D , I was so lucky that I didn't fill up the bike :) anyway a few minutes later a buss full off Chinese tourists arrived and they helped me out :) then they took pictures with me and my bike all most all off them :)
So centre side before you fill up :beerjug:
