Try some ultimate ear monitors, it's a revelation listening to clear music no matter what your speed. The best bit is because they cut out wind noise you don't have to keep raising and lowering the volume depending on speed, just clear music at a level thats perfect:thumb
I don't go anywhere without music on now, mp3 player through the intercom, the only choice I have is I use helmet speakers for short trips and in ear monitors for any autobahn work.

Which model of "ultimate ear monitors" have you guys gone for?

How do they work at high speed?:nenau

Cheers

Ummmmmm....

I think there's only the choice of a hard or soft silicone compound, and colour of course.

I've recently had some Green Leopard devices. Generally very pleased, although I've discovered that you need to be careful routing the tubing to avoid it getting buffeted in the breeze and thus impinging on the music. Oh, and they don't seem to handle the bass as well as the Ultimate's. But, they're much easier to clean when they get any wax in them.

Headset Services at Shoreham airport also make some, as do some Vision Express shops.

And there's Custom Ear Protection from Dorchester. He's at most bike shows.

Thanks for all your replies guys ... confirmed what I thought ... it's the way ahead (as it where!):clap

That`s only because all the replies you`ve had have been from those who think it`s a good idea to ride a bike while having your brain plugged into an electrical gadget with a musical output.

Until this one,of course.

I got the ETYMOTIC ER6i for the equivalent of £44 sterling off eBay - great sound - they come with an assortment of ear plugs and are very comfortable to wear. They seal to the ear canal and cut out a lot of noise - I could hear the music perfectly clear from standstill to 70mph.

I'm still a noob to bikes - found that I was fine on the main roads with the music on but on the smaller ones I didn't realise I relied on the engine sound so much.

Yeah, but you ride a Buell, so you wouldn't be able to hear an I-pod anyway. The vibration would make the earpiece fall out.:D

I don't - most I'll do is sing to myself when riding, but then I'm not a huge music fan (I don't listen to it very much full stop) and I personally find it a distraction. Have no problems with concentration when on the motorways/autoroutes etc without just normal earplugs in.

Each to their own :nenau

Like others, I find that the type of music can alter my mood and riding. Noticeably, if I'm listening to driving rock, I seem to be more aggressive. But listening to something like the Allegri Miserere and I actually tend to slow down :o :o :o

I hope your MP3 isn't on shuffle, your riding would be more erratic than a random thing:D

I also use an MP3 routed through a Starcom (mounted under the back of the tank on top of the air filter housing) to Ultimate Ear monitors. Also have the phone connected by bluetooth and set to auto answer. Some one wants me the music switches off and I can talk without having to press any buttons at all. Auto terminates when the caller hangs up.

Music is just background, it doesn't mask traffic noise and I agree that it can help concentration.

2nd'd but if you use them through a Starcom it moniors the ambient noise from the microphone in your helmet and adjusts the volume to suit. Go slow very quiet, go fast just a bit louder to compensate but never too loud IME.

I was always against the idea of listening to music whilst riding but have changed my mind over the last few months. When the mood strikes I use a pair of Green Leopard monitors (cheers Fil) hooked up to an iPod shuffle which I clip to the belt of my jacket.

Bluetooth sony earbuds on necklace

I use a set of Sony DRBT20NX.CEK bluetooth headphones which come on a necklace thingy (will break if pulled hard so won't strangle in a crash). I then link via bluetooth to my pocket pc which has windows media player and satnav. the headphones have a remote control which sits on the bottom of the necklace just by you breast bone. it lets you pause, skip, change volume etc. so if you want to concentrate on riding you can pause etc.

It's rather good actually and since the headphones cut out exterior noise you have music on really quiet. And the only downer...£45 a set.

Music...the only way to Travel.....IMO:thumb

Ipod and In-Ear Monitors....purfek...:D

I just went for the standard in-ear monitors, you can get them with filters on but I didn't bother. Speed really isn't an issue as the monitors block out wind noise so all you can hear is music, it's not like helmet speakers that need turning right up to battle wind noise then deafen you when you slow down, music is at a constant level no matter what speed your doing. The good thing about the in-ear monitors rather than the ear bud type headphones is that once there in your ears theres no protrusion so no pressure from your helmet causing ear-ache (thats if you can get your helmet on without pulling them out in the first place) once you've worn the in-ear monitors a few times you'll wonder how you ever got on without them. Rode 7 hours to Garmisch in total comfort, no wind noise and cystal clear music. Certainly wouldn't venture onto the motorway without them, you've got to be some kind of knobber to ride without hearing protection anyway, music or no music and I know which is better. :D

OK .... I've now thoroughly tested my ultimate ears and I can say that this is the ONLY way to go. After messing around with lesser solutions to try and save some money, I am proposing that you skip that time and money wasting step and move straight to the correct choice.:thumb2

.

As well as the choices above, Ultimate also offer full shell or half shell - i.e. Whole of your ear, or just standard lower ear canal

I am currently awaiting a set of Ultimate in ear monitors after a very pleasant afternoon last week at Coolcarbons drinking coffee, admiring the views and generally enjoying the warm hospitality oh and also getting a set of impressions taken. From the responses I appear to have made the right move on this one.
Just wondering what the preferred method for mounting or fixing the iPod is and are they water resistant to any extent.

i put mine in my breast pocket. all controls accessible through the material except volume. even that works if i take a glove off or if gloves are slightly damp.

always meant to get one of them radio remote thingys, but never got round to it.

Although I haven't got an Ipod I've got a sports case for my mp3 that clips to the fuel cap key flap, easy to see and p*ss about with then*

*obviously not whilst in motion though :augie
