Just had an enjoyable morning testing the new BMW releases. I have owned 1200GS and 1100RT and presently have 1150GSA and 1600GT so, for what it's worth:

1200RT
Looks lovely, very well put together, huge fairing, hidden bolts, clearly well designed and seems solid. Panniers large and easily take full face helmet.
Ergonomics good - BMW seats seem comfy from the off these days. Slight feeling that I was "thrown" forwards over the front wheel.
Excellent mirrors, vibration free
Screen was OK-ish - still some serious buffeting of the shoulders whatever height the screen was. But on a windy motorway, neither were uncomfortably blown around
clutch light, gearbox excellent, brakes very good, especially rear.
Nimble bike with excellent road holding - an easy bike to ride well. The police will love it. Very chuck-able.
Good grunty motor at low speed, bags of torque front the off.
Only down side was that above 90, once again the boxer engine runs out of puff and the roll on in 5th above 80 was disappointing. Absolutely nothing compared with the whoosh of power you get from the 1600 6cylinder. The 1600 is addictive - change down to 4th at 80mph and twist the throttle and you give out before the bike does. With the 1200RT there is forward motion but nothing like the sense of power. For that reason, I would not buy the RT.

GSA
I have ridden the GS and did not like it - I found the steering too light as if the fork angle was too steep. It was knocked off course on bends by pebbles.

The GSA felt much more stable without loosing the flick ability.

The bike is not so "one piece" as the RT - there are bits here and bits there and I agree the crash bars look like the dental brace of an american teenager.
Wind protection was nearly as good as the RT.
Mirrors good. Ergonomics fine.

Engine character suits the GSA more than the RT and then there is the dynamic mode. :D oh yes, we like that!

There is a character to the GSA that makes you smile - it may be mass produced but it is not anodyne. A bike that becomes more than just a machine in your garage. A bike that makes you think up new reasons to travel further.

Bottom line - the RT is the better bike, but the GSA is the one I'd buy.

In short, although you know you could ride all day on the RT, the GSA is the one that makes you WANT to ride all day!

Thank you for listening!

I agree that the engine suits the GSA better than the RT. Both have the dynamic mode which livens up the performance.

I really liked the RT especially as the missus liked it to and everything is very practical, but if I was buying it would be the GSA

I saw the RT last night at BMW Park Lane's launch party.

Nice looking bike, incorporating many of the best bits from the 1600GT. If I were in the market for a cross-Europe on tour bike, I'd give it a go.

Saw the 1200 GSA, too. I am not sure what it is; stuck somewhere between a Ducati Multistrada and the old GSA. All together, 'too many bits' for my liking.

It's the S1000R I really like.

Ooh, déjà vu!:P

Had the GSA for a 3hr test ride the other day and was both pleased and also disappointed. I'm riding the 2012GSA at the moment and found that the engine of the new bike was noisy (in comparison to the quiet of my bike) especially if you had the visor up enjoying the warmer weather. The noise was like a bag of nails rattling around and I take it that this was from the new position of the clutch and a few other bits. There was also the small nudge forward when you engaged 1st gear, then there's the mass gadgets its a wonder it doesn't have a TV on the dash. As far as the rest of the bike it is impressive and I've got a day long test ride next week to see if I can live with the rattle and the gadgets.

You do know that you can buy one without all the gadgets ;)

I know and am seriously considering it because the engine is superb. Just been browsing the forum and started to read about the apparent clutch issues on the LC - it is a bit of a concern - how common is it and is it just a matter of having the correct oil.

Like most issues reported on forums, it only affects a small handful of folks, and shouldn't be a deciding factor. For every person with problems, there will be hundreds without.:rob

I will be testing the gsa on Thursday ,a 2 hour run to the dealers on my 2011gsa, 2 hour test back to back , then 2 hours home on my bike then I will make the decision.
My gsa has full Maxton suspenion and is properly set up so the new water cooled gsa wll have to be bloody superb to justify a change .
The money is there for a september delivery date but if the new bike isn't a huge leap forward over my older bike it is staying in the bank

Why September?:nenau If you like it, surely you'll want to enjoy it over summer?

Well firstly two dealers state there are no more bikes of the colour and spec I would want available and the next build run is June.
Secondly my bike is set up and equipped exactly as I want it and I have a 4000 mile plus european trip booked up so I do not want a change of bike right before.
Last time I did that due to work committments I was rushing around to get it run in and serviced and get bits and pieces sorted before going away and then at 700 and odd miles coming off the ferry in Zeebrugge the rear shock went, sort of spoiled the holiday.
Anyway no hurry if I like it and decide to buy I may wait until next March then a new improved version will be out that will have put right any glitches which by bmw's consistent record are bound to appear
