A review of the Carpuride 702B.
After over thirty years of using Garmin Products on my motorcycle touring, And, Starting and administrating the Facebook BMW Connectivity group (27K members) I started noticing the persistent comments about Android Auto & Apple Carplay. Well, I decided to jump in. I’ve just returned from a 4000 miles trip Through Denmark, Norway & Sweden. And learnt a lot.
I own BMW motorcycle. With the Nav Prep cradle fitted, So after lots of research, I bought the Carpuride 702 B. which comes with the BMW mounting plate. The unit arrived, I unpacked it, and clipped it into the BMW Nav Prep cradle.
Turned on the bike, Bingo. It started up. And in summary, Wow !
Interface
The unit has the Carpuride screen initially, This is where you can pair the unti, to Phone & Headset. Adjust Screen brightness, volume etc etc This screen after 10 or so seconds then switches to the Android Auto (Or Apple carplay) page. Its literally the same for and AA or ACP which I use in my other vehicles.
The screen on the updated version has auto brightness, If you have the older units, Its very bright. And will need manually adjusting in low light, night riding.
The touch screen will require touch screen enabled gloves. But does work well.
Water on the screen is no issue. Heavy rain wont affect the screen. Also, the screen is clear, in both Night and sunny days. My 7 inch 702 is fantastic in full navigation mode.
Navigation.
Why O why have I not investigated this before? Brand blindness? Google map is simply the best. Nothing comes near, Yes, you have other apps, Waze, Apple maps etc, But for detailed accurate, and precise navigation, I find it can not be beaten. I learnt so much about the Google maps navigation over three weeks in Scandinavia. Points of note.
Before I left home. I did download all the areas as I know, that if im out of internet data connection? Not once did my navigation stop. And I was in some very isolated areas, for days. Things I learnt, the time to destination, it shows three colours, Green, No traffic or holdups. Orange for delays and red, for road blocked. The compass is a fantastic addition, knowing your general direction, The road speeds continuously shown. Although, I wished, it showed your current speed, or maybe it does, I just need to find that setting? Instantly show whole route. But the best thing, on my phone I have all the saved favourite places already in google maps. In my tent, I can search for a place, look in satellite mode, read reviews etc etc then send click start and put phone away, When I get on the bike, Its already navigating. Fantastic. All relevant information is shown along the route, Traffic, Road works, alternative routes etc. The main reason for any device is Navigation, and Google maps can not be beaten.
Media
I have 30GB of music on my phone. With the 702 I have access to it all. All the albums are shown, and easily selected. Carpuride has opened a whole new music library for my whilst on the bike. I can select any album on the move. Before with the BMW system I had to start the album before setting off.
All the radio stations I listen to are listed in the Radio app. I can switch between stations. For football, Pod casts or Pop master on Radio 2 ! All album art is shown, which wasn’t the case for BMW.
Although now I don’t have access to the BMW selection wheel, I use the Sena for volume. And the touch screen. I did NOT miss the use of the selection wheel.
Overall usage
It works. Faultless, Always connected, always auto started music. Navigation was a joy.
Points to note.
Battery - It does use the phones battery. One example, Unplugged phone at 0500, Battery on the phone died at 1430. I don’t see this as an issue, as long days Just plug the phone in. My phone did through up a warning, telling me the Radio app was using considerable battery.
Messaging – If you want. You can read and reply to all messaging. By voice. This was reassuring to me when away, With family
Security – The unit is locked into the BMW cradle, Not once did I feel the need to dismount it. It was left on for three weeks. Campsites, Hotels, Ferries, Outside bars and restaurants.
Data – Through my trip, I was using data. I started a data usage app. For three weeks. I used 11.55 GB, this was all normal usage. Youtube, Pornhub, Facebook etc etc AND the carpuride all day. Both navigation & internet Radio. I did not notice any real change is usage. The mounting is solid. And set correctly at my height It does not block any of the TFT.
The unit is simply brilliant, why I didn’t look into this before I don’t know. It’s completely revolutionised my trips. It’s a joy to use and made everything so easy. Now I don’t have to faff around starting music before setting off. I can select an album to listen to, knowing that when its finished, I haven’t got to either stop and change it, or repeat it until the tank need refilling. I changed the start Up splash screen to BMW Adventure, which was a nice touch. The split screen on the 7 inch is great. Navigation and media clearly showing, Or Full screen Navigation.
The carpuride is a Yes from me. And I will fit this to my new R1300GSA (when arrived) \AAAAA
