Throttle body freeplay, where is it measured?

This may appear a basic question but I need to set up the throttle cables on my 2012 GSA, I have no problem understanding what freeplay is or where to measure it at the twist grip but first of all you have to set a 0.5 - 1mm freeplay on the left throttle then on the right.

How is that measure as you can't see the cable. Is is by pulling gently on the cable case and if there is more than a mm movement tightening the adjuster so that moves only by a mm. I can't see anywhere else that the freeplay can be measured or am I missing something??

Indeed as you describe just pull the cable from above the sheath but keep one hand on the throttle pulley to make sure it doesn't move as you pull the cable.
Provided you have some play then just adjust one throttle body (usually the right) to synch with the other, if this is required.
You don't need to worry about the freeplay being exactly the same, just that you have some.

You may need to pull up the rubber covers, then you can see how much free play you have by moving the outer cable up and down in the cable holder/adjuster ... don’t get anal about the exact amount of free play. Just attach your gauges and synchronise them, I adjust whatever side is “behind” in the pick up or which side has most slack.
