2003 twin spark 1150GS

Last time the bike was serviced by a dealer, the idle was too fast at about 1200 -1300 rpm. This was the 12000 mile one.

Not really bothered by this. 1500 miles ago ( 24,000 service) I adjusted the valve clearances, revs were the same. new air filter, all plugs.
Today I noticed it's idling at 1500, I thought I'd look at the throttle body screws. (big brass things, just to let you know what I touched) I screwed these lightly home, noted how many turns on each. Just thought I'd try to slow the idle, screw them both in, doesn't make much difference. I was thinking that if they were screwed all the way down, the bike would stall, but it doesn't.

Any thoughts as to what's going on?

The throttle cables maybe too tight, they need some slack .

is the choke/fast idle returning fully .

Looks as if everything is returning to the throttle stops.

What about removing the fuse for 30 seconds, No. 5? Turning the ignition on, and opening & closing the throttle twice. Is this worth a go?

Only when there's a full moon -

check the throttle body clamps aren't to loose or the hose isn't split inbetween the throttle body and cylinder head = spray some wd40 around the join, see if the idle alters

Throttle body clamps are tight, sprayed WD40 on hoses, and the rubber gasket between bodies & cylinder head. Still idling fast, any more ideas Steptoe. Sensor maybe? I had thought about splitting the connector on top of the air filter, I'm making an assumption that this is an air sensor, perhapa there might be corrossion on the terminals. Much the same way as the connector block for the RID fuel display goes awry when dirty.

Other question is that am I likely to damage the engine by continuing to use it?

You said that you did the valve clearances........

If the valve clearances are too small....especially on the exhaust valves...that could cause your problem.

If you blip the throttle, and the revs are a bit slow at coming down,it`s definately too tight exhaust valve clearances.

Check them again on a totally cold engine....without a wine glass in yer hand. :D

I'll have a note on the way to work tomorrow. But will it cause any long term damage? Probably not.the last car I had was a Renault 5, no rev. counter, but would do 25 in third on idle

What happens when the air temperature sensor inside the airbox isn't working? Would this up the idle speed, my mate has a GSA 2004, wouldn't hurt to swop them to see if it makes any difference. Reasonable idea??
