Throwover panniers

Is anyone using throwover panniers on the R1150GS?
I'm looking to buy some for a weeks trip to France. This will be my first real trip of any consequence in 20 years of biking although I commute daily some I'm not weather shy and the bags will get wet!
The GIVI Voyager T421 Touring Panniers @£80 seem to be a bargin but I have absolutly no idea if they are suitable.

Hmmmm !

Throw overs ! .
Its Been a while !
The only danger with the throw overs is the exhaust ,
I ve been that soilder with the "Burning Throw overs" ,
probably explains why i get so hoted up over the Exhaust
extensions i make and sell.
In the past i have seen some lovely wee innovations to keep
the exhaust gas,es at bay whilst using Throw overs .
The Best throw overs on the Market are "Gear sack"
not cheap.They are dearer than the Givis you mention. But they are the Best.
Security is out the window with this set up , but you already
know this.
Sorry i know nothing of the Givis.
A good option would be to try to hire an alloy box set ?.
I am sure if you posted a somone would "rent a set".

If you're travelling solo then you could easily just bungee a sports bag on the pillion seat. Failing that Hein Gericke seem to be doing deals on Oxford Products throwovers whenever I go into my local shop. A set of sports panniers should clear the exhaust on a GS since they're meant for use on sports bikes (as the name suggests)

Hein Gericke also sell a roll-top PVC bag for £15. This is fully waterproof and seals simply by rolling the top of the bag over a few times and joining two halves of a buckle together (sorry, not easy to explain but very effective).

This is only really an option if you extend your rack (search this site for Reyno's rack extender). If you don't have a passenger you could remove the pillion seat, fit a locking tooltray cover (Touratech) and attach the bag there. In fact, you could probably attach two bags there...

I use Oxford throwovers on my GS.
Went to France/Spain a month ago and they were fine. The trick is not to do up the underseat velcro strap too tight then they sit well clear of the exhaust (when you fit them you'll know what I mean). They are the expandable ones so can take plenty of kit and easily removed to take into hotels etc. at night.
AND i got them virtually brand new with carry straps and rain covers from a charity shop for 25 quid.

I use Oxford throwovers on my GS.

Seconded. A cheap alterantive to BMW hard luggage. Stays well clear of the exhaust and plenty of room. Properly bungeed it doesn't move either.

On the Oxford web site they have Sports LIfetime, Hump back or 1st time versions of the bags.

my ones are Oxford Sports which are expandable. They are shaped to run parrallel with the exhaust. They may have been renamed for 2005.

Yea, thanks guys!
I purchased the humpback bags and tankbag too from busters.
I had a bit of a fright when I tried to buy them on the internet, got all the way to the check out and found that delivery was 7-10 days (I was leaving in 10 so a bit close for comfort). So I rang them up and they said I could have a next day delivery. Apparently they are inundated with orders from the internet site so they have removed the next day option from the site - go figure! Someone needs to have a word with the sales manager I reckon!
Anyway they arrived next to next day but I don't mind as they look really good and useful. I'll post a mail after my trip. Cheers.
