Seem to have a moderate 'ticking' sound, more noisy on the left side, only when under load at about 3000 RPM - 'smoothes' out both below and above that range. Not excessive, and less noisy (almost completely disappears) when 'revved' at a standstill, ie off load. Wondered whether it could be an injector, rather than valve clearance/chain problem. The noise is not engine temperature dependent, which also suggests a noisy injector in my view. However, would appreciate some of your expert views and/or suggestions on how I can quieten my beast down. Could always purchase an aftermarket exhaust I suppose!!

Try placing your hand UNDER the throttle body where the cable runs and move your fingers around and try and clasp them around the bottom of the TB to see if the noise stops. If it does, then it soundS like the same problem I have, which is apparently the throttle body butterfly bearing thingie that has worn. I am told that it's not serious and the best cure is a new throttle body ( Right side, like mine, is £108 from BMW, I think, but double check). If it's not that, then I'll hand you over to someone who actually knows what they're talking about:D

Thanks, but I think I'll give grasping the throttle body whilst underway a miss!! Nevertheless, sounds very plausible - I'll report back if it makes any difference when throttle is blipped at a standstill.

Agree

It is almost certainly a throttle body, been there and done that.

In fact I have been wondering if there is not any way of overhauling the throttle bodies. I am a bit keen to have a go but did not keep my old body to try it out on.

If any one has one or a pair that are heading for the bin then I will pay p/p and maybe I can have a go and sell them at a much better price to you lot.
