My r850gs makes a ticking noise from the left hand cylinder when cold and disappears as it warms up. Will this be valve clearances or something like cam chain tensioner ? :beerjug:

Ps before I got it she had only done 1500 miles in 6 years (if this makes a differance)

Ant,
You probably have the old style cam chain tensioner. This drains its oil when sat, so refills with oil on startup,
You can get a kit to upgrade the old style to new style tensioner from the likes of motorworks.
Its easy to do if your used to using spanners

Flog it VERY quick before it goes off!!

As NeilDD days, probably left camchain tensioner - did mine while back and made considerable difference. IIRC old tensioner has 17mm bolt size, new one 15mm so easy to check if it's been done.

Cheers Chris and Neil will check and replace not fazed by a bit of spannering.:beerjug:

There's a Youtube vid here that gives an idea. I managed to do it without having to butcher any spanners but it is tight to get to. Mine started to leak a small bit after a while, so just gave it another tweak and was fine.

Just looking at that again - yer one does make a bit of a job of it alright :D

Yeah I see what you mean I felt like giving him a hand :friday

Fitted new type cam chain adjuster today took about 15 mins easy job. On starting bike a bit of noise till it filled with oil then ran silent the best it's ever ran. Thanks for your quick replys and sound advice :beerjug:

If the ticking only fades as the engine warms up, check the valves and rocker shafts before you do the tensioner. The old type tensioner only ticks for a second or two after starting and goes quiet as soon as oil pressure is present.
