Ticking

do these engines sound quite noisey (ticky)? mine does and was wondering whether there was a problem. recently had it serviced at a local BMW dealer and they didnt say anything.

I can't really say that i have noticed a 'tick' sound form mine or others I have listened too. Can you localise the noise to a specific part of the engine?

not sure, had a bit of a listen and it seems to be the top. so i am worried about valves or it may just be valve train noise whic is normal. i may just be being paranoid.

just checked my oil when i got home from work and around the neck of the tank it is creamy white!!!!! i'm pretty sure this isnt right so i'm going to see if ocean bmw can check it out for me. also, having had it serviced 2 weeks ago i a bit concerned that my coolant is very low (as in when the bike is upright you cant see anything in the expansion tank) especially as this was (as the service sheet says) checked at the service.

any advice?!?!?!?!?!

creamy white froth around the filler kneck is just condensation usually caused by short runs sounds like you need to go a good run

ah that makes sense, i had only riden back from work which is a 10 min ride. i will take her out for a good spin. might be a bit late for work in the morning

as for the ticking noise, i will have a check to see if anything is lose.

aye thats your problem engine not up to working temp. causes the oil to condensate doing a 700 mile round trip to the mad cow rally bury st.edmunds this weekend dont reckon on much condensation after that

i try to warm my engine before i ride. i never just ride off. always let it run for a bit. although it still wont get the oil properly warm though will it. might set off for work a bit earlier tomorrow and go for a ride somewhere.

i will try to explain what i know about this effects (and i hope you need no perfect english language).
afaik, white foam on oil is often seen especially in colder seasons. A lot of members in other forums wrote also about. Little foam in the oiltank is also normal because it depends on the lubrication system of our engines. The second oilpump (from sump to canister) is sucking oil and also little amount of air. So after stoping engine there is alwais foam on the oil in the canister.
Now to the noise. In our engines is a build in decompression system which works at lowest revolution. So you can hear sometimes clacking sound while starting or stoping the engine.

you've out my mind at rest with the oil thing now.

the noise is happening whilst the engine is running not just when starting or stopping the engine (if that is what you mean ) or do you mean when pulling way or coming to a stop? (when riding?)

also need to top up my coolant - what is recommended for this or should i just use water - or should i buy come coolant?

engine coolant: it is also known that the original fluid level at new bikes is rather low. (BMW may use it sparingly). Never use pure water, use green or blue coolant. Best ask the BMW dealer for the original mix.
Special noise: i meant only the noise while starting or stoping engine. Otherwise i can´t here any unusual sound. Maybe the primary gearsprockets (the link crankshaft to clutch) are a litle bit loud. But this is a huming noise.
