Time to sell the X?

For me the Xchallenge is a fantastic bike that I have always enjoyed riding, but I am wondering whether now is the time to sell and swap to a different bike.

The problem is that I have accepted a new job which will mean that I am bashing up the A38 for close to 50 miles each way. I have no doubt that the X will cope with it and I am not desperate to sell especially since I have fully modded the bike: Tony Archer seat, screen, TT tank, heated grips, expedition rad, WP forks, Hyperpro shock and more. I can't think of another bike that will fulfil as many roles as well as the X. There are however bikes which will cope with the road miles I will be doing much better and I have actually only had the bike off road twice this year. Plus sticking 500 miles a week on a single cylinder bike that already has 39k on the clock might not be a recipe for longevity.

I won't be allowed to have 2 bikes (unless 1 of them is a VERY cheap dirt only bike), so is it time to trade for a GS?

What if you buy a very cheap road bike purely for the commute? There are some amazing bargains to be had in the 500 to 1000 range that would be great for the commute...

Your X set up seems far to great to give up!

Guy next door to me has bought a lovely 1st generation fazer 600 for 1100 quid. It's a lovely thing, not quite mint, but not far off. Fast, comfortable, cheap to insure/run.

Sounds like the best way forward to me

Car? I personally know the efforts and rewards of modding the Xchall. It's my only bike now as it can tickle all my itches when or if I have the time.

But I have a car for work etc.

Bike only for work and absolutely no spare cash for a 2nd bike. The only way of getting a 2nd bike would be a cheap road bike and cheap enduro bike - sounds like lots of cash spent in repairs.

Only option is run the x or sell and get a similarly priced (or cheaper) more road biased alternative.

Wonder if your modded WP front end would fit on an 800?

I have some original forks with fecked rebound if that helps?

F800 has same crappy front shock set up a the Xchall so would need reworking for any serious off roading.

And before the 800 lot get upset yes I'm sure you can ride them 'anywhere' but the front shocks are so nasty the maker wouldn't put there name to them just like the Xchall.

Well, the Xchallenge engine is bullet proof, so maybe you should just keep running it

No brainer for me. You have your own perfect "bespoke" bike and the chance to use it 100 miles a day! Get it fekkin used and stop whittling. If you don't, someone else will get the enjoyment AND clock the miles up, whilst you're doing 100 miles a day on a minger !

Having been in a similar position (albeit with a car) in the past, my advice would be to wait until you've been in the job a few months before you decide what to do.

I didn't... sold the car (my 1st WRX) and bought a diesel before starting the job. Hated the car, hated the job and consequently quit, sold the diesel and bought another WRX... expensive lesson learnt.

That's good advice. I'll give it a month or 2 and see how I get on with the job and the commute.

buy a Xcountry keep all you mods and you'll get a more versatile bike to commute and have fun off road during the weekend.
