I'm getting an annoying rpm related rattle, which I think is the timing chain. So I'm thinking about replacing it and the sprockets and associated parts. I'm looking at second hand and wondering whether the r1150rt will be the same as my r1150gs? They look the same but I need to know 100%......I'm not keen on using second hand parts but I think the cost new would be inhibiting......any thoughts please?

Looks like they’re the same, but we parts are only around £150 plus VAT for 2 timing chains and 2 camshaft sprockets. It’s unlikely that the difference between new/used would justify using used parts.

It's the timing chain, not the camshaft chains, haven't priced them, but if they aren't too expensive (I think they will be) I would rather fit new.
Thanks.

What have you done to "Diagnose" the fault or have you just said that is what it is ??

Did you check rocker end float Valves clearances etc etc

Before you jump on your high horse and go off one one

Remember

We don't know what you know!!!

Bike? how many miles? Single Spark? Twin Spark? etc etc

Can't hear it!!!

Can't see it !!

Don not know what you have done to try and diagnose the fault !

So do what RadioFlyer said and use the site I linked you to to do some parts checking…👍

TC Tensioner? ......... https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sh...21-BMW-R_1150_GS_00_0415,0495_&diagId=11_1849

or could it be the CCT - seems more likely - tell us more.
There is also an oil pressure timing chain tensioner that was my diagnosis many years ago on an 1100GS I had... I didn't fix it then but probably would now... Annoying, not necessarily a prob in the 30k I did on that bike and I've had various rattles and probably a piston rattle on later oilheads when hot at certain revs...

42000 miles twin spark, replaced cam tensioner with modified one, idling quite sweet, done tappets and end float was in tolerance. But the noise comes from the front, that's all I could think of. It was quieter when cold, and rpm related. Alternator belt is good and fresh oil and filter..... are they normally rattley? Should I be concerned? .....Since I've fettled other noises I'm hearing it more, but it seems noticeably louder after a good run.

Yes I'll replace the spring I think it's easy enough and low cost, thank you.

Have you consulted an online parts fiche to see if the part numbers are the same for the two models?
Just done it, thanks for that thought.....the GS and RT 1150 parts are the same. And very expensive £100 roughly for the chain alone.

Nice one @Johny w Here is the 10,000 dollar question

GAWD I HATE asking this

What oil have you in it ??

Quieter when cold gives me the vibe you have some of that there thin fully synth schit in there Booooiiiiiiii??

I have NEVER heard of an 1150 needing a timing chain sub 100,000 Miles (If at all!!!) !

I don't normally use this thread anymore seeing that I no longer own an 1150 ( but have previously owned 3 )..but I did have the same issue on my last 1150.
Chain tensioner noise from the front, so went ahead and replaced said chain and tensioner ( that front flat shaft seal is an interesting fit ! ).
The noise didn't go away, regardless of oil type.

I would suggest that you contact and talk to Mikeyboy ( or Steptoe, Neil ) off of here before you order any parts.

Well that's good news to me as long as its not gonna da.age the engine... thanks,
A thicker mineral oil goes like piss anyway when hot. And its going to take longer to reach parts when cold, and stiffer cranking. A fully synthetic oil keeps the viscosity!! What's the opinion on a good friction reducing additive? With it having a dry clutch could be worth a go maybe.

Thanks, bet you were pissed off when the noise didn't go away.

Indeed..money and time for nothing !

20w/50 semi synthetic Silkolene for these engines ..

I'm not experienced enough to suggest a remedy, the aforementioned are :beerjug:
