Timing chain and sprocket compatibility

Thanks, bet you were pissed off when the noise didn't go away.
Well that's good news to me as long as its not gonna da.age the engine... thanks,
A thicker mineral oil goes like piss anyway when hot. And its going to take longer to reach parts when cold, and stiffer cranking. A fully synthetic oil keeps the viscosity!! What's the opinion on a good friction reducing additive? With it having a dry clutch could be worth a go maybe.

Here's the thing I don;t know what breed of motorcycle you are familiar with ??? But these are agricultural and noisy

I suspect that You may be happier with an S1000XR 4 cylinder beastie ??

Anyway I digress!! these old ducks require Nothing but simple old Dino 20W50 It was never designed for super slick super Low viscosity oils

BMW Changed the oil spec to Fully Synth about 2010 I think not for the twin cams but across the board

Which was a problem for our local dealer as they bought "bulk" off shell as a group and I think it was just to make revenue totals for the year when it was a recession more "Glitzy" for investors They changed it back a couple of years later

AnyHoo!!! IF and Be Honest with yourself ??? Do you ride it like you stole it i.e. for example at 110% reactor power all the time??

Then by all means stick in super dooper expensive snake oil, Oil :hide:hide:hide

I have been servicing them for about 20 years now and unless a customer asked for Fully synth they got 20W50 "but" always an OE spec filter be it air, oil or fuel! Always Top line Brake and Clutch fluids and GL5 spec gear oils

The Single and only engine failure was a muppet on an R1100S who never checked his oil level It was too much bother to find a wall to lean it against !! Well until I handed him a $1000 bill for a replacement engine and fitting it (Clutch whilst in bits too #R1100S ) I also made him a wooden wedge which brought the bike up to a safe degree just off vertical so he could see the level

So basically through all that waffle I suspect it is Okay and just thrashy, I don;t tend to use any sort of funky engine oil in my bikes.......... R1150RT Twin Spark 94,000 miles, R1200GS and an R100GS

Perhaps a days run to see someone who is more familiar with the bikes?

May be something that would be a cheaper and quicker option for you???

Anyway Good Luck on your journey whichever route you chose! :D

Thanks, sorry for the late reply. You're right I had a bmw k1200gt which I loved till I was knocked off by an idiot deciding to go round a roundabout in the outside lane and taking me out.
Got the gs to ease myself back in after my fractured spine......I don't thrash it!!
Consider myself carefull.
I think I'm probably, as you imply, expecting too much in wanting a quiet-ish engine. As you say, they are rattly, well I'm afraid I just don't know!! Rattly to me means poor engineering. I am having a bit of a job settling into the gs, the bolt upright seating position plays havoc on my back and the suspension feels poor and not very well damped, tried all settings. Load the bike up for touring and it's beautiful, suppose that's what they're made for!!

Indeed..money and time for nothing !

20w/50 semi synthetic Silkolene for these engines ..

I'm not experienced enough to suggest a remedy, the aforementioned are :beerjug:
Thanks.....just bought motul 10w50 for the next change too 🙄

Take if off and Lob it as far as you can And If you find it again? Burn it with Fire!!

Pure Schite construction

Mahle OC91D

Knecht

Or BMW

I am fussy about certain things and filters is one
I'm surprised you say that, I saw a guy cutting them open and comparing them, and the hi flo and mahle came off the best!!

The ONLY filters I have ever had issues with have been K&N and HiFlo when fitted to BM's

They are made out of silver paper and I would not use one on a Beemer

HiFlo changed their filters a while ago.
They’re now very good. I fit them to my own bikes, which I would never do with their older filter.

Fair comment Neil I haven;t used them and the only ones I ever had problems with because they were so cheaply made were Hi flo and K& N

Pure rubbish! Silver paper thickness

I used to agree, even posted a few times about avoiding Hi-Flo, but they’ve since improved 👍
