timing chain change

i am hearing a rattling noise from the left cylinder , propably the chain tensioner wich i am going to change soon. Is there a way to check if the chain needs changing?
Is it an open link chain or do i have to dissasemble tha whole motor to change it?

tensioner only - more than likely - do a good search on here - its well talked about

yes i ve read all there is to read about it and i am going to change the tensioner one way or the other but i want to know how to check the chain forr excessive wear ant the way to replace it

Keep it simple, install a new upgraded tensioner and all your worries about the timing chain being excessively worn will disappear.
