Hello

My R100 GS has 135 000 kms and I don’t have much history of the previous owners so I’m planning to change the timing chain in my way to kill an annoying clicking noise.

What parts should I buy to do this job?

Should I also change any thing else like piston rings, bearings, …

thanks

Thanks!

Very useful

Do you think that I should change any thing else in the engine in a bike with 135 000kms?

Motobins tips has the following:

Exhaust Valves have a definite life, after which they are liable to lose their heads, with terminally expensive consequences for the piston and cylinder head! The R45/65 valves, with their 7mm stems, can fail after 35,000 miles, while the 8mm stem valves fitted to the larger models should last for 50 to 60,000 miles. Prevention is cheaper than cure!

60 000 miles = 96 000km

I've never known anyone that has had this happen though? (touch wood fast) Steptoe would probably be able to give more info.

Hapened to me some years ago. Had an ex plod r80rt about 100 000 on the clock. One day south of Chester doing about 89 and one valve let go. recovered the bike ,ordered new(USED) piston and head from motorworks and was back on the road within a day or so. Have already done Bertha and this winter will definately do the valves on the g/s, 45000 miles
