Hi

The timing cover on my GS is so corroded I decided to replace it.

The BMW trained mechanic at work doesn't have the special puller and the cover just will not move short of butchery.

I tried to buy the puller via NOG and was told they are not allowed to sell the special tools.

Has anyone managed to buy/borrow/make or find a workaround for this problem please.

Many thanks

looks simple enough to make.

certain designs of 2 legged puller would make a good base to start with.

motorworks can order you special tools but they're not cheap.

BuMW Park Lane at Battersea are often very helpful when it comes to order parts / tools.

I agree with cookie as it ought to be easy enough to bodge something.

It looks like it's just two long bolts that screw into the case with a central threaded rod (in other words a big bolt) that pushes on the shaft in order to pull the cover away from the engine. You could make one using a thick-ish plate with holes drilled for each bolt. The central hole wouldn't even need threading as you could put a nut on the big bolt under the plate and wind it off with that. Interesting to know why it's tight and needs pulling. Need to be carefull not to damage the end of the shaft, looks like there's an additional protective spacer thing placed on it for the puller to bear onto.

I'd be interested how you get on ith this as I'm just contemplating doing the same.

Good luck

the covers are stuck on with silicone gasket

just bung a coin under the central bolt to protect the shaft.

Just done mine (twice, as it leaked the first time).

My method was to remove the plastic cover, alternator belt and crank shaft sensor. remove all bolts, then GENTLY use a small prybar between the lugs at the top of the cover. This will get it moving, then I run a sharp razor blade round the edge seal of the cover, being careful not to scratch the metal faces, et voila! It's off!

Hi

Many thanks for everyone's input.:beerjug:

I found Vines could order the part without any problem except:
1. It would take 4 - 6 weeks to arrive
2. The parts man was really helpful but couldn't believe the three parts to the puller only came to £28.79.

I ordered it anyway and will wait and see what arrives.

In the meantime I contacted Steve at Motoscot after Simon was kind enough to pass me the details. Hopefully it will be sorted soon.

Bill,

I've just this afternoon taken the cover off mine. I made a puller out on old bit of 1/4" plate and 3 old bolts but to be honest it's not really necessary.

It's possible to hook a big open ended spanner behind the lug where the ignition timing sensor plugs in and lever it gently against the crankcase. That releases the silicon that holds most of the cover tight in place, then, if you've not already done it you need to undo the bolt in the center of the balancer shaft (behind the small square cover) and begin to ease the cover off allowing the balancer shaft to remain behind as it pulls back through the bearing in the timing cover.

That's it. If, like me, you pull the gear off with the cover (!) make sure the timing marks are right when it goes back.

Are you going to scrap the old Timing Cover?

Bill,

If you are thinking of chucking out the old timing cover, I might be able to find a good home for it?

I'm looking at building a kit car with an R1200 engine. I have a chance to get an engine which has been in a shunt, but am told the Timing Case is U/S.

If you want to recycle your old Timing Cover it could be worht a beer?
