Hi,

My son was planning to visit the Man TT next week, but injured himself last week during a football match. Tough luck but trip had to be cancelled.

As a loving father I sacrificed myself by offering to go on a roadtrip with him after the summer, second half of September seems most fitting.

I always loved to do the NC500, might be a bit ambitious for a week but still. My son is leaning towards Wales and/or Lake District. I think I know the Lake District gets the most rain of the UK, so going there in September might not be the best idea. Although I doubt the Highlands will be much better in that regards.

As he is traveling with a Ducati Monster, we're on-road only, and (coming from the Flatlands) typically the more hills the better.

Any suggestions coming from the collective wisdom of this forum would be welcome!

I'd visit the Borders...anywhere around Coldstream or Kelso in the East and Moffat/Lockerbie. Some great roads (no big mountains but some stunning scenery) quiet, lovely towns etc.

If its ferry across to England, then why not to Newcastle.
If the NC500 is too much (it gets hard to book accomodation all the way around now..) then consider borders. As mentioned above. Then, do the West Coast Scotland. Up, back down. Its is stunning.

The NC500 can be done comfortably in four longish days from Newcastle. I have done exactly that.

Spend a few days in Moffat at the Buccleuch Arms Hotel. Some great riding in the area and the family that own and run the hotel are brilliant, they will be able to give you some nice routes to explore.

The weather in September, will be what it will be. Whether it will be any wetter or indeed dryer in Wales, over the Lake District, over Scotland or indeed over Cornwall or maybe Norfolk, is a matter of pure conjecture. Prepare for the worse, expect the best.

That said, the weather in September and into early October, is - as a rough rule of thumb - pretty reasonable over much of the UK.

Week before you Intend to go check the weather for Scotland/Wales/ Northern Ireland/Republic of Ireland.
Wherever the best weather is, go there - last minute accommodation that time of the year should not be a problem.

this was posted today re. a route in Wales using a hotel I recommended in my home town

plenty of other roads in Wales and the English side of the border in Herefordshire, Shropshire and Gloucestershire

happy to advise on Wales and these English counties as they have been my home patch for decades.

3 hours from Harwich gets you into the Cotswolds around Stow on the Wold.

2 days in Peak District.

2 Days in Yorkshire.

2 days in Lakes.

Back home for tea and medals.

Bit of variety, not too many miles to do.

If you do head to the peaks and want guiding around give me a shout
