Titanium for H&B engine bars

I'm going for a trip during Easter which will include some vigorous riding on a particular mountain road in the Eiffel region...

... I've got the H&B bars on my R1200GS, and I fear that they might touch ground in the corners... and if they don't do that while riding, they probably might do that should I come off (not planning on that tho!)..

What I'd like to do is to put some titanium something where they're closest to the ground. So that should they scrape the ground:
a) They'll show nice sparkies!
b) They won't get scratched.

Anyone have any ideas or tips on what I could put on the bars...

Oh, btw, I'm fully expecting the flip-up-lid-grey-beard-pipe-slippers-brigade to come up with some nice suggestions like, "don't lean that far" and "don't ride that fast" and perhaps "do you think you're Rossi" :D

:D :D :D :D :beerjug:

If you pull the footpeg rubbers off of the pegs, you'll see there are some nice round holes in the pegs, which you can put a bolt through, secured with a suitable sized washer and nuts.

I've done this, just with normal steel bolts about 2" long. However due to the recent weather and rather crappy roads, I haven't scraped anything yet (apart from the crash bars when I dropped it last week :D ). Some experimentation would be required to see what length of bolt is required to touch down before the crash bars, but not too long so that it scrapes prematurely. Or you could just get a really long one and make it the right length by scraping it a lot :D

You could probably get titanium bolts if you want pretty sparks - which I have to admit sounds like a cool idea.

Oh by the way, I wouldn't put anything on the crash bars that's designed to scrape while you are riding - if the bars touch the ground they'll lift the front wheel off the floor which is a bad thing.

That's why the footpegs fold back - so if they scrape the ground you get a warning that you are pushing the limit but it doesn't exert upwards force on the bike.

Putting something on the crash bars to protect them in the event of a spill would be ok, but it seems a bit OTT, protection for protection as it were, also making the crash bars bigger in any way will reduce your ground clearance while leaning even further.

Good idea re the bolt in the footpegs... I shall investigate...

I know about the reprecussions of the engine bars touching down, I however don't plan to go dragging the bars around the corners (that's what tianium knee sliders are for :P), but if they should occasionally touch, having them not scratched and nice sparkies flying would be nice :D :D :D

Now where do I get titanium bolts.. :P

I have H&B bars on and the sidestand still touches down first on theleft and the centre stand on the right, so you'd be better off screwing a bit of titanium onto those for sparklies.

hmmmmm

:D :D :D

I think which bit touches down first depends on your suspension settings and how many pies you've eaten.

Certainly on my bike, if it's fully loaded, the centre stand will scrape first, but with less load on the rear of the bike is higher so footpegs / engine bars are more likely to scrape.

Oh, the ideas, the ideas!!!!! :D

With some titanium bolts I could spice up my sparkies a bit more :D and, my toe sliders... OOoh... and my sidestands...

... a veritable rolling firework!!!

   :beerjug:

;) :P

Sir, would you be interested in seeing this particular road in the Eiffel mountains from, say about 1cm off the ground... most of the time... ;) You might make sparks fly for the Ladies watching... ;)

Hate to tell you this Tarka but if you had your ankle done on the NHS they actually use mild steel :D

Thank God for that !!!

I thought I had blood coming through my dressing last week....

It`s obviously only rust....what a relief. :D :D :D
