TKC 80s - Spain or Morocco

Hi Peter
I brought my own and got them fitted at Aviles Racing in Granada which was on my way through the south of Spain in April this year heading to Morocco. They could have provided them as they are a dirt bike tyre specialist. Their website is:
http://www.avilesracing.com/localizame.asp

Contact details are: Neumáticos Avilés Sánchez S.L. C/ Dr. Alejandro Otero, 9 Edif. Zafiro 18004 Granada Tel/Fax: 958 523161 [email protected]

Might be of some use to you....

How are you getting to Spain?

If you are using Plymouth - Santander, there's an independent motorcycle repairer just outside Plymouth who will supply and fit TKC's probably cheaper than you can get elsewhere, he will also hang on to your current tyres and put them back on for you if you wish.

also interested - is it possible to buy them/TKC80/ in Morocco?
If I bring them with me - can they change them? I mean are there decent shops dealing with BMWs?
TIA

It may be but it is not going to be easy. Large cc bikes are rare in Morocco (except among visitors and some companies that hire dual-sport bikes. You may be able to source tyres from such companies).

You won't find a BMW dealer outside Casablanca, or anything approaching what you may consider a dealer anywhere else but on the up-side, the Moroccans can turn their hands to almost anything.

You will have no problem finding somewhere to fit tyres for you (here's a typical Moroccan tyre-fitter place)

but don't expect them to be interested in the cosmetics of your wheels.

If you are worried about the rims, take your own rim-protectors, show the fitter how to use them when they get the tyre-levers out, watch his amusement that you are worried about a few marks flicker over is face for a millisecond and then watch him use them as you request.

I've changed my tyres a couple of times in Morocco (from old TKC80s to new ones). Beware, they are directional tyres, so watch carefully what happens.

When I was with Sugarcube, Jochim and others in Jan 2006, some of the guys had TKC80s delivered to a hotel southern Spain from a company in Portugal.

Thank you, Mike!

One more question - would it be a nightmare with customs to enter Morocco with a set of shining-new spare tyres on the bike?
To reach Marrakech for me means around 4 or 5000 km of highways through Europe. No need in doing them on TKCs.
Can I find a place to store the replaced tyres for back-change in Marrakech?
TIA

Customs won't be interested, they see it all the time.

Moroccans are very friendly & helpful people (it's a requirement of Islam to assist travellers but I reckon they would be like that anyway). As long as you are able to make them understand what you want to do, you'll have no problems.

Thought about using a van / trailer to get the bike to the south of Spain, and then hop onto the ferry with nice new tyres?

Not very hard core though :o

Hi John,

I prefer to move on the bike for trips - the riding season here is too short to rob yourself of pleasure :)

Missed this thread...sorry! :blast

I carry tyres down and it's not a problem getting them fitted as Mike says.

Three suggestions for you if you didn't want to take them with you....

1) speak to Steve Larkin, aka Gringo here....I've got his phone numbers if you can't get hold of him.
He's a top geezer based in Al Haurin, 50 mins up the road from Malaga and I'm pretty sure he could source some TKC's for you....his company does bits for 4x4's and he's the sort of guy who will go that extra mile and a half to sort people out....there is also a very good English bike mechanic in AL Haurin who he can put you on to so fitting wouldn't be a problem.

2) In Marrakech I've used a Goodyear dealer called Geuliz Pneus s.a.r.l
60 , Avenue Abdelkrim El Khattabi, Route de Casa Geueliz (the main road that goes up towards the motorway past the McDrive :spitfire and the Marjane supermarket)
The director in there, Adil Tazi, is very helpful and said he could get us any tyre of any make in two to three days, so if you can find someone who speaks good French, call him and see if he can get some TKC's in for you to pick up.
His number 044 447562/044438346 and his mobile is 061 15 90 62

(You'd have to add a 00212 to those and take off the first 0 for calling from the UK.)

3) I've got 6 pairs of TKC's on board for the October trip- I only need 5 so assuming I haven't used the spare pair at the end of it, I could leave the spare set somewhere down there if that's any good to you?

thank you, mate!
Well noted. My trip is not yet decided and most probably will take place next April-May. so no need to store the tyres, thank you.

TKC 80's

Hi,

Had the same dilema with tyres for Maroc, the big change with the TKC's is the change in handling on the road, the bike "fall's" into corners as compared to the Tourances. Scary at first, but you can ride the wheels off it when you get used to the new handling. Rode from Ireland to Morocco, did the piste from Erg Chebbi to Zagora and rode home on the same set, used Ultraseal just in case but didnt need it. 5000 miles trip and about another 1500 miles at home before changing to Tourance EXP, great tyres. The twisties from Ronda down to Algercias is a MUST even with Knobblies, 6 bikes on the trip, 2 x1200 4x1150 all GS. 2 1200's stayed on road tyres in Maroc, 2 1150's rode down with knobblies and 2 1150's changed tyres in the camp site in Tarifa using a VW van and a plank to break the bead. Knobblies are not need for Maroc unless going off road, I was pleasantly surprised with the roads there, even better than home, but the best is off road!! use all the tracks you can find. Great info on this site for GPS MarocTopo mapping, a must. Used the Lonely Planet and Michelin maps but found not all pistes match up, some local advice used on the road condition or surface.

Hope this helps
