to ABS or not to ABS?

I'd say that the braking performance of the ABS 12GS is bloody good, some evidence:

....that shows it outbraking some serious light weight machinery.

I classify myself as a fairly experienced rider - do 12k/yr in all weather. I've never dumped the bike loosing the front end on non-ABS machines. However, the attraction of ABS is that extra bit of assistance when you're riding the bike tired, in the dark, in the rain after a long day at work - ABS - yes please.

If you're only going to ride the bike in good conditions at the weekend, save some money, go for non-ABS.

I enjoy my biking and want to for a number of years to come. If ABS gives me an edge in biking longevity - I'll take it.

But there's no right or wrong, there's a number of personal variables you should take into account.

There's also a bit of scare mongering on the servos. The latest thing about 5 ABS applications of the brakes in a row and they could stop working optimally. Fek that......if I've just had five emergency stops in a row, I'll be needing a change of trousers and a lie down :D

Mickey... no doubt the ABS did help you after the 'coming together' on the roundabout, but to get involved with the car in the first place :nono You saw the car appraching 'too fast' from the rear, knew he was there and going too fast, and still got involved. Sorry, but I'd have been braking and let him go on in front of me!

I did not see the car approching too fast,
he just lost it on the roundabout

ABS cost me £85 for a new mirror instead of hundreds + the added bonus of not having a 800lb bike landing on top of me :)

I wear a HG hi viz jacket, been riding bikes 24 years did 5 years despatching,
this was my first and only accident..

So stick that in your patronisng pipe and smoke it :tosser[/QUOTE]

Just the kind of remark you'd expect.
Apart from being one of my best mates for the last 20+ years i think he's more than qualified to talk on the subject being an ex bobby for the last 30 odd years ,ex police class 1 driver/ instructor , member of the police vip escort squad. shall i continue or have you managed to take your head out of your own arse yet ?

Micky,

So stick that in your patronisng pipe and smoke it

Actually, Mick's one of the least patronising guys you could meet, most people get on well with him...perhaps it's just the way it came across, Gates

I suppose there is a solution to this debate??, and that Is !, Buy a bike with ABS and If you feel like It," Switch It off".. :D

Quote... "I can see a car in my mirror in the outside lane..." wasn't there misen of course, and I don't smoke... "When the car, which is going too fast drifts into my lane..."

Mmmmmmm

Insults of course are for those that have lost the argument :beerjug:

:mmmm never thought of that. there speaks great wisdom :bow :D

My final words on the matter guys.... (Thank God they say...)

1) Thanks for the support :o

2) Thanks for the piss taking and abuse... if my comments get people thinking about their riding skills then I'm a happy chappy :) I'm willing to bet that Gauloises, since the incident, and others having read the banter, now take heed of traffic behind them when slowing for a roundabout... or whatever. 6% of serious motorcycle accidents are rear end shunts, so no ABS help there then :mmmm

3) Tomm... yup, it was Cadwell Park. Being airborne isn't the quickest way round the circuit though

4) Jay Gee... bang on, only so much grip to be shared between braking and cornering. Use more grip for one then you have less available for the other :thumb

5) Bingbong... there speaks great wisdom indeed when Geoffrey Deacon says "switch it off". He's right of course, you'll have the best of both worlds... apart from compexity and weight! Back to square one lads :nenau

Strewth, what have I done, this is terrible... I have been mistaken for someone who does give a damn :helmet

Cheers :beerjug:
