A long way from where I started!
That is the question.

Ive just bought 3 sets of locks for my ally luggage, and am pondering..... Do I code them to the ignition key, or do I leave them as is with a key for each, or...... do I code the other locks to one of the pannier keys and have one separate key for all the luggage.

I can code them myself. thats easy enough, to get them right only means running them with one less wafer each. That still leaves 5 which, to be fair is plenty. If someone wanted in enough, I dont suppose these little locks will stop em for long anyway.

the dilema is, If I code them to my ignition, thats the way they have to stay. If I just do them on theire own separate key, should I decide to sell the luggage, it has its own key, get my drift??

What say you?

If it was me I would code them, as I hate loads of different keys and leave the panniers on 99% of the time.

No brainer. I would code them to the ignition key - much much less hassle. You can always recode them when you sell them can't you. Also next time you are in your friendly dealer you can ask them for a few "spare" wafers from the wafer bucket.

Ah well there you go.

I was told today that you can't recode them you have to buy new locks once theyve been coded.

Tell me I'm wrong, but that came from a beemer dealer.
At the very least a mention to drilling to get them out again and new wafers was made.

How do you remove a lock to recode it without damaging it once its in the pannier, the last wafer locates itself at the bottom of the barrel and cant be released again it seems.

What would be wrong with one key for the ignition, and one other for all the locks?

Dealer talking rubbish!

Taking the lock out is VERY easy see here and look at the third post on it. I took mine out again 2 days ago because I had been running with 4 wafers in each and got the ones I needed.

2 minute job to remove the locks - remember to keep the key in the lock until you have your hand around the wafers and are over somewhere to catch the bits if they fall out!

Let me know if you need more help!

So of course there is nothing wrong with a second key but it just makes life that little bit extra complicated!

p.s. am happy to take my alu pannier locks out again tomorrow and take some pictures of me doing so if helpful and post them here - let me know

Cheers,

Mark
