Hi

I would love to come on one of your off road expeditions, but not on my precious 1200Adventure...

I have to get a 2nd bike to commute on, question, would a DT125R be any good for off roading (and the trip there) or would i be better off getting something bigger.

As a 2nd commuter and occasional off roader need to keep the costs down:)

Regards

Mark

Mark,
we only pootle along at 60ish on the roads to get there, so your 125 might just about be alright, but ideally you want something a bit bigger, say 250-400 cc.

The 125 will be fine off road with the right tyres as you'll rarely do above 30. But whatever you are on, some of the chaps will take the piss mercilessly if it's not a GS (then they'll quietly admit at the end of the day that doing proper off-roading on 10ks worth of heavy bike is a bit daft) :D But each to their own.

DT125s are based on the old YZ125 chassis so they make a great off road tool. Will happily sit at 70 mph when the valve is opened so if it's the right price then I wouldn't hesitate.

Years ago the DT was the hooligan bike for any self respecting 17 year old.:thumb2

erm, hang on

I don't blame you!

I don't 'off road' mine, I like to keep it in 'show room' condition...:thumb

oh must be another Dirtydog on the site,

COS THE DIRTYDOG I KNOW HAS A GSA THATS ALWAYS 3INCHES THICK WITH SHIT:aidan

if you don't off road the thing DD you've got the crappyest driveway i've ever seen:augie :thumb

OK, so I stretched the truth a little...:D

Anyway, the GS should be gone by August/September. In it's place will possibly be an HP sauce?

I've thought long and hard about the KTM but I'm just not convinced about it's longevity, servicing and dealer back-up compared to the HP2. I love the look etc of the KTM but it's just not enough. On the flip side, the HP2 is one feckin expensive machine with a headlamp off a Mini...

Still, the HP2 will suit my needs more so than the GS!

Probably change my mind by then and buy a 'Vara' and another WR for the same price...:ymca

Hi Mark

where to begin ??

some questions

what are you looking to learn from the experience ?

have you done any off roading ?

why go for a 125 and not ( for example ) a 600

why not use the GS for commuting ?

how much damage do you think that you will do to your 1200 and how much do you think it would devalue it ?

how long do you plan on keeping it ?

my two penneth

I started off roading on my 1150 adv a year ago, I hadn't been on anything other than the blackstuff before that ( although I do have 23 years riding experience )

the bike has cost me 10 k to get it how I want it, not that much less than your 12

I still consider myself only slightly better than useless off road

however,

the most fun, hardship, stress and outright fear have come from learning to ride the GS off road and I have loved every minute of it

riding a gs off road (for me) is about picking your route and balance, not speed as that will **** it, they aren't built as racers, that said you can nip along :augie

the damage so far has consisted of a slightly dented tank ( something that the 12s aren't prone to ) and a scuffed mirror, handguard and cylinder head, about £300 in real terms. I think this is a small price to pay for the fun that I've had :bounce1 :bounce1 :bounce1

I think that if you rode the 125 you would be bored senseless in no time ( and so will you Gaz)

if you want to go out on the smaller bikes why don't a few of you with them get together, buy a couple of OS maps and find the paths marked up as byeways open to all traffic and go ride them ?

I just don't think that you would learn anything from riding a 125 with people who are riding the pigs

better still bring the GS and have the laugh of your life, you won't break it and you won't get grief for not doing something that you think is beyond your limits

I hope this helps

if it doesn't then pm me and we can have a chat on the phone

all the best

Rob

Bob's right, riding a GS off road is good fun providing you're aware of the bike's limits which isn't to hard to gauge!

Granted, they are big bikes but you'll be pretty surprised how well they handle. And, if you can ride a GS off road pretty well, you'll be a feckin speed demon when you jump on a proper enduro 400 etc.

Come out for a spin. I took some lads out not that long ago who had never took their GS's off road before and they thoroughly enjoyed it.

We would never take you on stuff you couldn't handle as a 'first timer'....well, Bob might because he's a sadistic bastard...:augie

Hi Rob

Thanks for the reply, which has given me somethings to think about.

the point you make about being bored shitless on a 125 is VERY true so that one was dismissed immediately.

I have in fact ridden off road many times but not on anything as big as an Adventure. I have enduro'd an XR400R, ridden a montessa trials bike (poorly) and done some scrambling. It was just the weight of the GSA i find intimidating.

Since i dont intend to sell the bike, what the hell, i will bring it out and try it whats the worst that can happen......:augie

Pm me next time you have a Jaunt out and if i can squeeze it between work and babys i will go for it.

Thanks for your kind help

:clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap
you know it makes sense Rodney:thumb you'll be suprised just how good they are off road, if you've done abit you'll be fine as the ballance of the bike is near perfect, just try on a carpark doing very slow figure of 8s. rode mine down a flight of steps the other day just for the hell of it and it was as easy as on my 4rt monty, doubt going up will be as easy but what the hell we'll give that a go one night:thumb

Come out for a spin. I took some lads out not that long ago who had never took their GS's off road before and they thoroughly enjoyed it.

Come on then DD lets go do it again. Being one of the newbies (who fell off and that barely left a scratch) I gagging to go again. Loved every minute of it so lets go fella.

I'll be there with my race face on :augie

You've got me all excited now, woo hoo. Nice and easy suits me fine.
