I've bought a 1973 Honda CB350 Four, the V5C says it is a Historic Vehicle already, but it is nowhere near ready for the road yet and so its not insured, so I presume I must SORN it, however (& I've looked on .GOV web site) I'm sure not sure what to when I'm ready to get it on the road, no tax is due, no MOT required, anyone had experience of this when their restoration finally gets on the road? Ta

If you've just bought it then SORN it. You can use the green (New Keeper) section of the VC

It's the easiest way of saving yourself an £80 fine

I would still insure it just for the theft part then you won't have to SORN it either.

?? Sorn is ved related not insurance, you can still insure a sorned vehicle. Having Insurance doesn't mean you don't have to sorn,

Maybe too late, but a possible answer ..

Tell them that it’s a frame off restoration and it currently can no longer be considered to be a motor vehicle in it’s current state.

The term 'motor vehicle' is defined in section 185(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1988 and section 136(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as "a mechanically propelled vehicle, intended or adapted for use on roads"

Interestingly I've just received a letter from the MIB (Motor Insurance Bureau) about a DT400 I bought in December 23

It states that according to their records the bike is not insured which is correct as it's currently sat partly assembled in my front room.

When I checked on the DVLA database it says the bike is 'Taxed' until June 2025 :duno

I know when I got the bike I had to apply for the V5 as it had been lost. As soon as I received the V5 back from DVLA I went down the Post Office and they did the relevant things to get the bike registered as 'Historic' therefore making it Tax & MOT exempt.

All I can think of is that when DVLA registered it as Historic the Tax clock started ticking so as soon as I dig out then V5 for it it I will SORN it again

Why the MIB are involved in this is beyond me as it does mention giving me 28 days to sort this out and the word 'fine' is mentioned

Maybe they're trying to drum up some business for their members by getting you to insure it? I'd just SORN it ASAP.

No tax? It must be SORN'd
No insurance? It must be SORN'd (insurance against theft only doesn't count)

When you are ready to ride it, insure it and tax it as you would any other bike, it's just that the "tax" is free.

I always sorn in winter . Remember you always pay for entire months ; so do not sorn on 1 st of the month , because you’ll still pay for that entire month .
Likewise , don’t re tax at the end of a month
