A border and a dying town

Captain Antti Vahe of the Finland Border Control was reflective: "at it's peak, this crossing (to Russia) saw 7 million crossings a year. Now, nothing ".

We had arranged this meeting before coming here. Before riding across the country heading east, always east. Before riding the gravel roads through the forests. Before riding the last 20 miles of perfect tarmac in silence, with no accompanying traffic, past warehouses and malls designed to cater for the Rouble, now shuttered and desolate. It felt as if some terrible catastrophe had happened here amongst the lakes and forests and lush arable farmland, and all the people had gone. "Those cars", said the Captain, pointing to the no-mans land between Russia and Finland, "have been there for years".

Captain Vahe is proud of this region, his country. His grandmother was made homeless twice by the Russians, in 1939 and 1945. "We are the defence for Finland, for the EU, for NATO. It's real".

On the border is the once prosperous town of Nuijamma, now crumbling with the possible consequences of military action. "Yes, we worry", a resident told us. "The young have gone, the jobs have gone, the money has gone. Now it's just us old folk, and no-one will buy our houses." The weeds are doing well here, the people not so much.

I swim in the lake, on the Finland side of the posts in the water. Blue for Finland, Red for Russia. "Don't swim past the posts", Captain Vahe said. "If you do, I'll be doing paperwork for a month".

Interesting trip.
It was brilliant. There are various YouTube videos that give you the impression that Finland is nothing but straight roads- we found lots of great riding roads with little traffic, and didn't see another UK registered vehicle in a the time we were there. I recommend it.

I had planned to do St Petersburg via Finland back in 2018 but had an accident. After recovering from that, world events overtook me.I will get to Finland, possibly next year for my 60th.Those photos certainly aid the desire,as does the description of the deserted town(my sort of place to see and experience)
Anymore photos, possibly of the town itself.

Well written, it sounds like the opening paragraph of a National geographic article!

We spent a couple of weeks in Finland last Spring. We expected it to be boring straight roads, forests and sod all else and were pleasantly surprised to find it wasn't. Well, there are lots of forests, lakes and straight roads...but it didn't define it to us. Will definitely go back. (We sort of did the Russian border up by the Norwegian border at Grense Jakobselv. We passed the closed border post then drove for maybe 20 miles alongside a rive that was the border. Great area)
Weird seeing a road sign for Murmansk....a city I recall being mentioned on the news when I was a kid in the 70s.

I read about your accident on another thread - I hope you have made a good recovery. Finland - you should go, if you like:

Will do, and I agree with your comments. Porvoo is a very beautiful and interesting place.
