My front brakes were a bit sticky and a closer look revealed that those small annoying little crud stopping seals (that stop dirt going down the side of the brake piston before the main seal) have been forced out a little and are causing the piston to stick.
I took one out and managed to tidy everything up enough to get it back in and working but another one is kinked and stretched beyond reusing.
The pistons are good as are the main seals so I'd just like to replace these little feckers but there only seems to be complete service kits available including pistons :nenau

Mike.

Have a chat with Powerhouse on 01246 260665. They can supply seal kits or offer a rebuild service. Hopefully they will be able to help.

Ok, will do, thanks for that.

Why fuck about with your Brakes??

Replace them all with service kit and stay safe!

P.S, A bit more attention to flushing callipers FREQUENTLY in winter is the proper answer

Jeez, read it properly, I'm not fucking about with my brakes! The brakes are in excellent condition and have a full service history from day 1, the pistons are all clean and without any scoring or pitting.
The only minor problem is that a couple of the outer dust seals have got a bit of wet behind them resulting in some mild corrosion forming and pushing the dust seal further out than it should be, therefore a couple of pistons are sticky.
Spending around £140 for 2 complete service kits when all I need is some outer dust seals, sorry, you obviously earn a helluva lot more than me!

P.S, This bike has never been used in winter...

Tried them but with no success unfortunately, repair kits (seals only) are available for every other brake caliper fitted except for the Tockico Evo calipers which are on the front of my bike.
I'll try to see if I can salvage the dust seal for the time being as the alternative is beyond me at the moment.
Thanks for your constructive suggestion though :thumb

Is it not worth pulling out the dust seals and re contacting Powerhouse with the sizes and perhaps photos of the dust seals profiles to see if they can match them up, I very much doubt that Tokico only make that size dust seals for one specific caliper , it will probably be shared across a range of other applications

The guy I spoke to there seemed very knowledgeable and honest, the minute I mentioned Tokico he said that they had been in discussion with them several times but were still unable to supply the seals separately for whatever reason, he did say that if they ever became available then they would be the first people in a position to supply them :nenau. Frustrating indeed.

Neil could be on the right track, measure the recess the seal sits in and the diameter of the piston were it moves through the seal and check for items from other manufacturers. It will help to pass a few hours on a cold wet autumn evening.:)

I'll look into it but these seals are so thin and spindly and won't be too easy to measure properly.
There must be loads of these Tociko calipers with sticky pistons and the main cause will be these pesky little rubber rings, maybe most people don't look too closely!
I wish I could just splash out and replace everything as per Farkoff but to me there's a simple solution, unfortunately I haven't found it yet :(

Wait till you ride in winter! Just a "Couple" of examples of what I had in to "fix" :blast and what I finished with :D

"Usually" Stripping the callipers and removing the salts and making sure the bits are as spotless as possible and plenty of rubber grease in the grooves before assembly to prevent salt ingress (If there's no space it can;t get in there)

Good Luck I would probably pull them apart clean the grooves and boil the seals in hot water with a COUPLE of DROPS of fairy liquid and see if that shrinks them again (Warning Warning Probably best not to use Misssus' best pot for this!!)

But a bit of elbow grease and hard work and ....

Nice work! Maybe I should just try to get hold of some Brembo calipers and ditch the Tokicos', seem easier to get individual spares for...

I do ride year round, just not on the GSA :D

Maybe try checking Jap bikes with similar sized pistons?? Or boil them and dry them and check if they fit

There is a trick you can do with a razor blade and superglue but have to have red rubber grease to prevent it catching

Just reviving this thread but not really anything new to report. I've got the same problem, couple of sticking pistons and as above the outer dust seal has swollen and popped out of its groove. Looked all over the net and can find the 32mm seals but not 36mm (34 and 38 but not 36 )

Try Cradley Kawasaki - Kwaks use a lot of Tokico callipers and Cradley WILL supply individual piston seals.

They can also supply the little o-rings that go between the calliper halves which BM refuse to supply.

The best fix though is to ditch the Tokicos and go Brembo. Did that last year on my Rockster after 10 years of pissing about with Tokicos and couldn't be happier.

Haven't tried it yet But May try these ones as an experiment

But have probably reached the pinnacle of abused calipers with these bad boys !!

Probably not been in these for 3 or 4 years from I last serviced this bike

Thankfully I had the Alloy AntiSeize paste on the the little allen bolts that hold the shield on

Bottom line is IF you ride a bike in winter a cleaning of calipers is a bloody good idea No matter if they are Brembo or Tokico

Yamaha are pretty prone to this effect as well If I recall correctly my foremans advice at the Dealer Ship when it was multi franchise

U'r just Gettin upset over nuffin Mister

Must be a spell check thing

I use caliper but its a spelling mistake in Opera's UK dictionary and I am tired and just clicked and auto corrected

P.S. text Now Auto Tarka'd

Sheesh, I had my share of UK winter corrosion in the long dark distant past, riding all year round in mid Wales, I am so grateful for our chilly BUT DRY winters, so NO SALT, my calipers have never been overhauled in 100,000 miles and 21 years, but I think a bleed is in order. :beerjug:
