Toll Roads in Norway.

I've been having a look around but I can't find any confirmation that toll roads in Norway are applicable to motorcycles. Can anyone confirm what the situation is for 2012 please?

I was there with a Motorhome last year in Aug-Sept.

Yes, in general, the roads are free of tolls for motorcycles, but there are at least two that you need to pay. One is the tunnel taking you from the mainland to the island of Mageroya, where the Nordkapp Tourist Centre is, plus of course, the toll road to the actual tourist centre itself. (The tunnel toll is due to finish sometime in 2012/2013 once they have finished paying off the cost of the tunnel construction).

I think there is another toll, which applies to motorcycles near Trondheim.

Most of the Norwegian tolls are AutoPass and use Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras, but face forwards, so wouldn't be able to read your number plate anyway. There are also no environmental tolls for motorcycles in the larger cities like Oslo and Stavanger, etc.

But remember, you will still have to pay the ferry tolls. In the western fjords (Stavanger-Alesund) - best biking roads and there are plenty of ferries. You can of course drive around most of them, but driving is not quick in that area and there is a maximum speed limit of 80km/h anyway, except for motorways. Best to take your time and take in the fantastic scenery.

I'm only go up as far as the Arctic Circle, so that one won't affect me.

I remember the ferries from my trip in 2003 so have no problem with the cost of them when I need to use them. I am looking forward to the scenasry again though.

Yeah, I was using cruise control a lot and had my eye firmly on the Zumo 660 GPS to check the speed. The motor home speedometer was about 7km/h off calibration so didn't trust it at all.

Living i Trondheim I can with confidence say that there are no toll for motorbikes in this area. As far I know the only place with tolls for mc is the North Cape itself, but I can't guarantee 100% that it's no toll in the fjords in the west Norway. Maybe toll in one or two places at most. In Trondheim it's free parking for motorbikes, just make sure to park at where there are signs for free parking.

The speed cameras i Norway only takes photo from the front, so there are no risk of getting speed tickets when passing them. It's the police with the lazer guns that might empty your pocket.

One final advice, NEVER EVER DRIVE AT DUSK/NIGHT AFTER ITS DARK. The moose and deers migrate over the roads and you won't have time to stop when they suddenly come rushing like kamikaze pilots. Motorcyclist always loose when hitting such big animals. The danger is smaller when the midnight sun is up because you have a better sight so you might see them earlier, but be careful anyway.

The blog here doesn't talk directly about bikes, but refers to a manual toll with a guy in a toll booth and since passengers get charged, I guessed bikers also are charged.

Good point about NOT driving at night due to the dangers of large animals on the road.

I was there last September and the only tolls I had to pay were when I was heading for the Atlantic road via Trondheim. My route was up through the middle of the country to the arctic and back via the coast.

I found this information about toll roads in Norway.
The first link is to a pdf file that I think shows all the toll roads in Norway.
The column "Vegnr" shows the name of the road (like the M5, M1 in England and so on). Column "Kommentar takst" shows where there is toll for motorcycles, which is three places, even if the the file shows four, Fv 551 is free now according to their web site. (Fv4, tunnel near Kristiansund, E69 near Nordkapp/North Cape) Column "web" is links to the different companies that have the toll road. If you want to know the price for the toll follow the link and search for for the word "takst" or "pris".

Just found this official overview that lists the 4 tolls that apply to bikes on public roads as of March 2012:

- E39/rv. 70, Kristiansund fastlandsforbindelse (Krifast), Møre og Romsdal, 42.-

- E69 Kåfjord-Honningsvår, Finnmark, 70.-

- Atlanterhavstunnelen, Møre og Romsdal, 57.-

- Folgefonntunnelen, Hordaland, 20.-

Then there are a number of private mountain roads, that only the gravel seeker will ever encounter.

As a wee side note i took my Landrover up the Nordkapp and then the Russian border in 2007.

Returned in 2008 on my HP2 with Mrs P on her F650GS and rode up to the Arctic Circle then to Skelleftea then home via the Norweigian fjords.

Imagine when to my surprise about a month later i get a bill for using a road in Stavanger for around £4.75 and was to be collected by a UK company on behalf of the Norweigians

I couldn't understand it as I knew there were no charges for motorbikes except at the Nordkapp.............On the back of the 'bill' was a perfect front view photograph of my 56 plate Defender

Seems the Norweigian authorities will go quite a long way to recover £4.75.............I reckon the phone call to the collection company and credit card charges cost more than the original bill would have been.........!
