to anyone thinking of buying tom tom rider v2 your money will be better spent buying a very large bag of sweets,i have had mine for two years and wished i had never heard of this company there customer services are the worst i have ever experienced in my life and i am 57 yrs old the unit never works when i actually need it to it has been back several times and takes ages to be returned i have asked for my money back but get no reply i have spent hours and hours on the internet /phone trying to resolve several problems all to no avail now i cannot even update my unit as tom tom home will not down load onto my computer i have had two computer guys look at this, as tom tom cannot fix it after 2 hours on the phone /computer ,the guys told me the problem is with tom toms programme and a lot of people are having the same problems so if you want to be driven insane buy a tom tom

Mini Review:

I covered 16 500 kilometres around Australia in August and September, and my new TomTom Rider v2 worked flawlessly. This was in temperatures ranging from just above freezing to close to 40 degrees, and on some reasonably rough tracks at times.

I can't comment on its performance in heavy rain, I only had a day or two of light rain.

I used the standard RAM mount and powered it through the small connector near the front of the tank on my 2005 1200. I didn't bother with the Scala headset for two reasons: I couldn't get it to fit my System 5 helmet (but didn't try that hard...) and wasn't sure if the Scala's batteries would last for two months - I didn't want to take the charger.

I'm very impressed with my TT Rider, and certainly recommend it for long distance touring. I've no idea how it would go when you're trying to find an address in the big city - luckily that is not something I have to do.

Same as that, I had one of those Garmin Zumo 550 piles of shit which got me lost more times than I care to mention. My TomTom Rider has been FAULTLESS!!

Me thinks you must a very seldom heard of bad one

im in the same position as Tunneruk and oz1200, my tt v2 has been flawless for nearly 1 1/2 years, in all conditions and all over different countries.

i loaded TYRE program onto it and its ever better using google maps

Ive had mine for about 3 yrs +-, 25k miles toured most of europe /scotland
/london rain and shine. I've had no problems [except when updated maps and SD card was too small but easily sorted]

Its refresh rate is good and keeps on going even if I ignore and use it to go off piste and try different routes/roads.

Its route plotting limitations compared with other systems have been solved/reduced [?] by the use of Tyre. If I was into adventure touring I think there are better systems out there but for my type of use its a good practical system


I dont bother much with the scala as its at bit flaky.

I use it in the car as well [got car cradle] and its stopped so much aggravation from the Mrs.

But it is a electrical gadget and they all fail in the long run.


I may look at other systems in the future but I have had good service.

Four euro tours and 25k with the TomTom Rider v2 not a problem in any weather ranging from pissing down to 37c! I think we have given it a fair test, I would recommend one to anyone.

Had a small problem with my tt and the service was fantatic they just kept sending me spare parts (so many i sold them on baywatch) until it worked "this was all free of charge" and it was out of warrenty. maybe you pissed them off

My friends had charging problems from the cradle various times then finally died on the way to normandy this year never to work again. This was after very little use, now has a zumo 660 which works but sends him on some very strange routes. Cant win really.

some people are lucky others get shite mapping,depends where you be an what mapping is loaded,I went to italy in june 2009 garmin 550 was crap ,got back into france ,it was ace!!! .Use a tom tom daily at work uk an no worries

Originally had a Rider Mk1 which was crap so wife used it in car and I bought a Garmin2720 which was great.

Then wife bought bike and Rider with new bracket (as original was faulty despite limited use) was fitted. 2000 miles later the bracket failed.

After a lot of agro Tomtom took the Rider back and after TWO MONTHS and lots of emails and phone calls they replaced it - with a Rider Mk 1 which failed.

A letter to CEO of Tomtom produced a Mk2 which my wife has struggled with. Crap routing and dodgy software which keeps turning it on and flatttening the battery. Despite Tomtom admitting the software is at fault they want paying to fix it!!

Given up and wife now has my Zumo550 and I have a 660.

My experiance with Garmin service. Sent back my out of warranty 2720 after I damaged it. Garmin sent a complete new system in 48 hours by courier with a free of charge invoice.

I have had a Garmin 12 for backpacking, the 2720 on the bike. That was nicked so I bought the 550. Wife has that so I have a 660. Also have Garmin XT on my phone and a GPSMAP60CSx for backpacking. All work great and have been all over Europe - including east Europe countries that costs extra for Tomtom mapping but is standard on Garmin.

I am one of the NEVER BUY TOMTOM AGAIN group.

my tom tom works fine when working the problem is with customer services as said before the worst i have ever encountered and they will send you insane before the problem is sorted unless you like spending hours on the phone / computer and getting nowhere and i mean hours and hours and hours

If you want your money back you need to speak to your retailer and not TomTom.

If its a application problem then just update the software and all will be fixed.

My TomTom Rider has been round the whole of Europe except for Spain (next year) and in total has done around 25,000 miles and counting. Tar'in them all with your brush is not representative of the products quality and I dont have a issue with Customer Service and I work for them.

As with any call centre there is usually a wait on the line of a few minutes and then you get your issue solved. If you unable to update your software then tell them so but its very likely you can fix the problem yourself with less than a hour of your time and a computer.

Errrrr..... no.

TomTom mapping is supplied by TeleAtlas which is part of the TomTom group.

Garmin mapping is supplied by Navteq which is now part of the Nokia group.

In the olden days when Navteq was owned by its self TomTom used their mapping on 2 of their 13 products at the time. Now TomTom use the world largest mapping maker, TeleAtlas on all their current products.

If you look Navman, Google, Microsoft and many many more use TeleAtlas mapping.
