Tom Tom Rider Fault

They bought a shed load of Tom Toms at work for our vehicles and NOT ONE of them has lasted 12 months before having problems due to the pins in the rear failing.
The units switch themselves off and on at random and keep changing to daytime mode at night or visa versa in the day.
They also have problems with the touch screens and also with having to reset them in cold weather when they freeze up.
The units when they were new were easy to operate apart from one defaulting into Serbo Croat for some reason but
combined with the poor base maps included in the package they haven't been worth the money

Hi I have just spent some time reading the post about the Tom Tom Rider drilling holes into the contacts on the back of the unit, because of loose mounting bracket. I am pleased to read that Tom Tom middle management and directors seem to be out of step with their customer support down here in NSW Australia who are willing to indulge in “slippage” when faced with a legitimate complaint. I am researching Tom Tom customer support. Because the new units again performance wise pretty good kit. Until in this instance a club member and good mate found his Tom Tom Rider 2 drowned the first time it went through a rain storm. It was behind a bikini faring or fly screen as we call them so better protected than the advertising implies is needed. The unit is advertised internationally as water proof and in fact able to stand being submersed to one meter of water, certainly a possibility if off road riding. Why would a customer who is able to show the retailer water dripping from the SD slot several days after the unit first filled with water. Be told there is no problem the unit works fine now? The Tom Tom Rider 2 failed to perform in the manner for which it was purchased. I am interested to know if there are other Tom Tom Rider 2 units which have filled with water.

My Rider 2 has done 11,000 miles + and no such problems.

Is there a chance that the SD card door wasnt closed correctly?

I know your friend isnt gonna want to admit to that so its hard one to answer but I know its not a issue i've heard of before. These units are waterproof to IPX7 standard which is VERY high.

This is pi360. The unit which filled with water was a Tom Tom Rider 2 it has been replaced today Thursday the 8 of January 2009.

Glad you got it replaced.

I have not read all 12 pages of this thread but is the problem more to do with TT1 than TT2?
Unless it was directly jet-washed, the cover left open for the card slot, or something similar, I would say that this was an isolated incident and a manufacturing defect that should be covered under the warranty.

ttr 1

have read through these posts to asbout page 7, and have not read anything about the springs corroding and weakening inside the mount itself which also adds to the insufficent electrical contact.
i had 2 mounts replaced by tt and both of those failed too. they eventually replaced it with a full version 2 rider which was very nice but made my ttr1 car cradle useless and had to buy a ttr2 cradle, albeit a much better system bits fell off the sd card flap and case within a week and when i contacted tt with concerns they basically said you have had enough off us and told me to glue it as it wasnt really that much of a problem
although all emails eventually answered and fairly satisfactory results i too was told from the beggining there were no known issues and for that reason alon would never buy tt again

by the way

i also have a practically new v1 mount if anybody needs one pm me

err cant pm

but I would be interested in the mount if its still available and potentially the car kit.

Email addy is samjaffacake 'at' gmail 'dot' com

cheers

New here, so Hi. I have a TT rider V2. I could never get the unit to charge via the 'docking shoe' (TT speak!). I contacted TT after checking the shoe with a multi meter, pins open circuit - power arriving from the cable, but no continuity to the pins. This unit was replaced with 8 days of warranty left. The replacement unit is worse! It has a short and flattens my 1200 GS battery in a couple of hours. As a mechanical designer, I would have to say that if I had designed this I would be ashamed! This is not robust enough for motorcycles! I suggest TT start a programme of Accelerated stress testing on this system - OR, listen to customers and accept that this is a flawed system!

I had problems with faulty docking cradles on both my TTR v1 and v2’s.
I now have a Garmin Zumo 660….sorted.

Now this old thread has bubbled to the top again, some comments to follow up my long thread on page 12.

After a bit of use the Rider II supplied by Tomtom as compensation for the failures of my Rider I plus their crap service (two months to replace a broken Rider I under warranty) has failed.

It had occasional use on my wife's bike and in her car but then it would not stay turned off. I.e. you could turn it off but after about five seconds it trurned itself on again. This meant that every time it was used the battery was flat and even connected to the bike their was a delay while it gained enough power to be turned on. contacted Tomtom via the horrible web form and a couple of days later got the usual useless automated reply making lots of stupid suggestions unrelated the the fault. Eventually Tomtom said it must be a software failure and if I did not have a computer backup of the software I would have to pay for it to be fixed.

As my wife had been lusting after a Zumo for a while anyway as it was clearly a much better system the Rider is now sitting in the back of a drawer. I will eventually get round to putting it where it sould have gone a long time ago - in the bin.

My history is now 2 X Rider I, both failed. 1 X Rider II, failed. Garmin 12 used for about 15 years, still works, Garmin 2720, I dropped it and broke it but Garmin still replaced it for free but eventually stolen from car. Zumo 550, used all over Europe with no glitches including countries not covered on Tomtom mapping. Now nicked by wife. Zumo 660. Softwarre still has a couple of glitches but reliable and works well.Garmin GPSMAP60csx for backpacking, absolutely brilliant.

I was looking for a definitive answer to which one to buy looks like you've just answered my query.:clap

I know it is no much help but, the ZUMO 500 goes now for 250£ on e-bay and I've got full EU maps with it ..ect no need 550 or 660 for £££££££££££

Sounds tempting....would you happen to know how the 500 differs to the 550? I cant' find the 500 listed on Garmin's site, presumably obsolete now.

..hmm matey honestly I duno, I recon there is extra car mount point in 550 package.. (could be upgraded firmware too?)
The 500 I’ve got works with the latest maps and supports routing.. This is why I bought it .. I bought 500 as GPS not as mp3 player or ‘TV’ or something..

It works for me :bounce1
