just bought a tom tom rider 400 and got a 2012 gsa can I wire this direct to the battery????? open to a few ideas..:nenau

if the lead has a power converter box built in (stepping down 12v - 5v) then it will drain the battery slightly even when the unit is removed, if its just a piece of wire to the cradle then no problem

Important: The red POS (+) contact needs to be connected to the motorcycle's wiring loom at
a point between the ignition and the +12V battery supply. The black NEG (-) wire needs to be
connected to the motorcycle's wiring loom at a point between the ignition and the -(GND)
battery supply. Attach to a 12V point that can be switched off by the ignition such as the light
circuit.
When you are attaching the mount kit to your motorcycle, follow these guidelines:
 If you are unsure about attaching the mount kit yourself, ask a professional to fit it for you.
 If you choose to attach the mount kit yourself, note that the Active Dock has a built-in fuse.
This means that you don’t need to add a fuse between the device and the motorcycle battery.

Page 7 of the manual. Wasnt aware the mount has a built in fuse! It suggests an ignition switched live, probably for the reason trainman suggested. Using the spare socket at the front is the safest/easiest method I would say. You could always run it off a centech fuse thingy, that would be switched. Just depends if you want to run any other items in the future. I've cobbled up my own relay/fusebox but still run the tomtom of the bmw satnav socket at the front.

I have the Tom Tom Rider 2 and the cradle draws a very slight amount of power all the time. I found it very variable as to whether it allowed the canbus system to shut down when the ignition was off. The give away was if you put the rider in the cradle before switching on the ignition and it immediately fired up the cradle and presumably the canbus system had been live since the last time you switched off the ignition. The following day you could put it in the cradle and it would not fire up until the ignition was switched on. If the bike is ridden every day the current drawn by the cradle has little effect on the battery but I once flattened a good battery after just ten days of the cradle drawing a trickle current. I now have the unit wired directly to the battery as the connector under the headlight corroded over the course of a winter while I had the cradle unplugged. To save the battery I have a switch between the cradle and the battery that is off unless I need the sat nav. I know the cradle for the 400 is different from the rider 2 but I presume it still may draw a current with the unit out and might stop the canbus shutting down when the ignition is off.
