Tom Tom rider

I have recently purchased a Tom Tom and without using it on the bike am impressed so far.
I have purchased the canbus plug from Nippy Normans and had an electrician join it to the sat nav wire
My issue is that whilst the unit switches on when the ignition is switched on- which is good. However when the ignition is turned off the unit continues to charge.
I am not an expert but if I left the unit on the bike would it start to drain the battery? I thought the canbus wire was clever enough to turn itself off!
This is not a major issue as I an take the unit off but really did think the canbus plug would not continue to charge if the ignition was turned off.
Any thoughts / experience of this?

And by canbus I mean the spare plug on the loom under the dash on my 2010 model!!

check your wiring ?, i have the tom tom rider v5
and with the same plug from NN, it turns off with the ignition
not sure what tom tom you have or if they all turn off with the ignition
the owner manual should give you the correct info.

Isn't there a delay before the CanBus switches down completely?

I went to the dealer to buy the plug to fit on to my Tom Tom

The very helpful Steve at Rainbow was all set to solder it on for me (they are not supposed to sell it direct)

He asked me which sat nav it was >I told him Tom Tom rider

Oh dear says he ... We don't recommend you run Tom Tom from the plug under the beak

The reason is that the can bus will not shut down when you turn the bike off, and if left could flat the battery


I run it from the accessory socket and pull the plug when I stop .. works a treat

Thanks for the replies. I don't think its the wiring as it seemed very simple so the reply from slimpickings seems to clarify the issue. I do not think it is a major issue as I am not likely to keep the satnav on the bike to flatten the battery - just seems to be another BMW anomaly- cheers and ride safe

I had a tom Tom wired into my canbus and had loads of problems with it flattering the battery even with the GPS removed, the mount was keeping the canbus alive. Lots of dead batteries until I finally disconnected the mount and hey presto things back to normal. Love the Tom Tom but beware....

Switch

I'd be tempted to put a switch in the circuit so you can keep it wired in to the bike. Just remember to switch it off....

The mount will keep the system live, even with ignition OFF and sat nav removed...according to the mechanic at Rainbow

I have a tom tom ride power lead with connect on the end you can have if you Want to eliminate a wiring problem?

That's exactly the advice I was given from two BMW main dealers,namely SBW & Bahnstormers.

I have wired mine direct to the fused accsessory socket. I also detach the TomTom lead from the holder when my bike is unused, as I was also advised that to leave it connected even without the TomTom would drain the bike's battery over a period of time.

BMW use Garmin devices so would be very unlikely to consider how their Canbus system would work with TomTom products.

If you had the supply being fed from a "fuzeblock" you could have it turn off when the ignition feed stops.
