The 2610 is slowly dying and I have started to look around for it's replacement. I have a TT for the car and find it easier to use than the 2610 - Post Code for example.

I have read the thread about the Urban with interest. Those who have got one will have used it for a while now and would be eager to know your feelings/findings of it. Is the 3.5 inch screen big enough - the 2610's large display was useful.

One post caught my attention - device was set up and new maps were available but memory was not big enough so maps are split into 4 areas. That must be a royal PITA. Could I go from, say, the UK to the Black Forest without having to mess about with maps?

Is it worth getting one?

Taken this from my reply on the other thread....

Always avoided using twat nav as I like have a pretty good sense of direction but finally gave in and got the Urban Rider Pro in early July as I was heading off to Venice via the Swiss Alps and Dolomites in August and would be doing 3500 miles

Must admit, I am a convert and was very impressed with the conversion of my TYRE routes, some of which were very complicated and on also on obscure single track mountain roads etc, the software is certainly a lot better than the Rider 2 which some of my friends had on their bikes and involved the inevitable stop and mark waypoint as visited...

The 'on the move' selection for things like fuel stop, 2d/3d and roadblocks is a big improvement on the old system and it is a lot more intuitive on re-routing and waypoints, as it seems to except 'almost' visited as being good enough to proceed without needing my intervention.

Problems I encountered were that the IQ routes irritatingly wanted to divert you on rat-runs through towns even though the main road was quiet. This feature I quickly disabled !!!

The other problem was very irritating and the was when nearest petrol station was pressed on the move the unit would often spit the dummy out and shut down, completely losing all the visited waypoints etc... grrrr... always did it at the most important junctions or when the fuel was really low.... Not a big problem I guess and hopefully a software update might sort this glitch out once Tomtom are aware of it.

In general I guess it gets a 9 out of 10 for what I needed it for :thumb

Yep... no problem on that and you would not need to change maps if you had Western Europe on it..... you would only need to swap them over if you wanted detailed maps for say Southern Europe or Russia for example..... I took a netbook with me so it would not have been too much of a problem for me if I had suddenly decided to head East but I can't understand why they don't just spec the Rider at 4 or 8 gig.... would only add a few quid to the price...
 
I was tempted, but "unofficially" upgraded my old V1 with the latest Urban navcore. The fact that you can't expand the storage and use your own SDCards was a big no-no for me. I've got an 8gb card in my V1 rider loaded up with a full European map, works just fine. If this was an Urban, I'd have to download seperate "Zones" for Europe, so when crossing from one zone to another, I'd have to connect to the internet from my laptop, download it, install it, faff about with POI's and other settings again, before I could even carry on...

If you have a V1 or V2, stick with that to be honest. The size of all future maps will just get bigger and bigger, so having only 2gb in a device with no possibility of adding more storage is a bit dumfounded.

Now that's interesting... how did you go about that? I assume you've upgraded all the maps etc ?

Maps and everything are updates too. Look for a forum called "ipmart" and a post by a person called "bmwdriver" which has "Rider3" in the topic...

TomTom Home complains to me about running an incorrect version of the Navcore when I plug it in, but everything still works fine (MapShare updates, etc)

I'll say no more :censor:
