tomtom rider help please

hi

I purchased a tomtom rider this weekend from Halfords. It came without the box and without the product activation code, although the maps have been loaded from the sd card.

How important is this product code - do I need it to unlock or load software etc?

Also if I dont have it is the unit just an expensive paperweight?

Finally its a bit of a pain to switch on and off - is this typical of all units?

I too find that you really have to push the button hard when switching on and off. I can't remember whether I used the product code when istalling the software and updating the unit so I'm unsure how vital the product code is.

Having bought it from Halfords, I think I'd be insisting on the product activation code, as you may well need it when trying to update maps/operating software in the future.

I have had two of these now and both have had the same with the on/off button being really hard to press. As for the product code I certainly wouldn’t be happy without it, if anything goes wrong you will need it for all your correspondence with TT, you will also need it for updates on your PC. Actually I just realised if you go on the touch screen to product information you already have it

One quick point, I wouldn’t trust the bracket, my first one wore the two fixing holes underneath and the darn thing fell off over a bump, TT recognized this as a fault and issued free straps for the units, I tend to zip tie my TT on to the bracket now.

Sorry I am being thick but where is the licence information - I get to the preference screen and that shows a bunch of number and I cannot find the licence screen.

is the product code the one in brackets (4 digits/6 digits)? thanks

The product code is actually on the gps. Not used mine for a while (prefer my Garmin) but if you go to the gps screen its either on that or there is a link to it.

You willl only need it if you need to register new mnap installs.

I am not sure about this, I have a vague notion that the device only puts the code into memory once you have activated it (using the code on the bit of paper). Certainly when my previous Tom Tom (PDA based) crashed completely in Calais one year, it rebooted fine, but in original form. Tom Tom where completely unable to help me get it reactivated until I got home and found the scrap of paper with the code on.

As to the on/off button, it is horrendously stiff, but it is also waterproof.

button is hard to push in all. the new bracket with the tom tom 2 has been modified and holds the unit well without problems. Touratech do a replacement one as far as i know but u shouldn't need it. Product code comes on a card the size of a credit card and u need it for upgrading/updating maps.

one tip: never leave the screen face up for a long time on a very hot day as the plastic cover over the screen will bubble and u will need to send it off for it to be fixed. Prob would happen to zumo as well.

When Tomtom replaced mine under warranty I could not use my old sim card as the new unit had a digfferent code. A call to Tomtom resulted in them telling me what buttons to press to find the code. Can't remember how now though,.

If you can get into the unit, from the map screen click bottom right for gps screen then click version number.

Slightly off-topic as this thread is from someone who has already bought a Rider but this may be of interest.

Tomtom replaced my original Rider Mark I and bracket due to the usual bracket/power connection problems. When I complained to Tomtom CEO about the aweful slow service (it took them nearly two months) they sent me a Mark II as well complete with car bracket and camera subscription as an apology.

Comparing the two the Mark II is essentially the same as the Mark I in a slightly different case but the new bracket and RAM mount is a vast improvement. The Scala headset supplied is better than the Mark I's dongle but still don't like it. I needed to cut a section of the neck skirt on my helmets )Schueberth C2 and BMW System 5) to fit it, I have to remember to charge it and the boom mike for phone calls is a pain to keep tucking under the helmet rim. The car bracket is vastly better as it has a built in speaker but Tomtom still did not get it completely right as they have made the arm on the screen suction mount so short that, unless the car has a nearly vertical screen, it is necessary to remove the mount from the screen to fit the satnav.

Although the Rider Mark II is much better than the Mark I and is a perfectly useable motorcycle satnav I still much prefer my Garmin 2720 (wife now uses the Rider).

Zumo is rubbish and you hear an equal if not greater number of complaints on the unit.

V1 rider has plenty of issues which have all been adressed with top of the line equiptment. I love my Rider 2 to peices.

If you have a problem with the headset I suggest you speak to cardo.

No idea, I have never used a Zumo but have a Garmin 2720 with an Autocom.

The comparison of headsets

The Cardo headset needs to clip on the outside of the helmet but that assumes an unrestricted lower edge. Many helmets have neck skirts including my BMW System 5, Schueberth C2 and wife's System 4 so it cannot be fitted to any of them without cutting lumps out of the skirt. The mic is on the outside so every time I put my helmet on I have to remember to fiddle the mic up under the edge and get it comfortable against my cheek before I put my gloves on. If I flip my lid up for any reason I have to take my gloves off to reposition the mic and if iI don't it jams the flip front.

I also have to remember to turn it on - which is also a sod with gloves on and requires pressing a blank bit of plastic for some seconds and I have to remember to recharge it.

Cardo warn against using it in heavy rain as it is not 100% waterproof., How can anyone make something that fits on the outside of a crash helmet and not waterproof it.

My Garmin has a standard audio out and is permenently connected to an Autocom. The autocom headset is INSIDE my helmet (which did not need modification to fit it aklthough it took a while). It does not need batteries or charging, it does not catch in the flip, it is not affected by water and all I do when I want to use it is plug it in. I can use my Garmin, mp3, rider/pillion, mobile phone and bike to bike all at the same time. Can't do that with the Cardo.

The Cardo works OK and I have had perfectly clear phone conversations at speed. The Garmin outout works OK and is even clearer.

I use autocom with my Rider system also but the feedback from the cardo headset is not bad.

Unfortunatly is like signing their soul to the devil is they say "100% waterproof". Contraception is never "100%" becuase there is room for user error. Im guessing this reason the Cardo is not "100%" is down to the same reasoning.

I thought the boom mic was a goose neck and should hold its positioning.

I used to have a motorola that stuck on with a sticker onto the lid. That worked fine but im sure that I would rather cut a little notch into my lid and know its bolted on as I was always paranoid that the bugger was gonna jump ship on me. It was really bulky compared to the Cardo kit.

My Cardo is going to waste at the moment, might put it on my spare lid and give it a blast.
