TomTom Urban Rider pro (aka Rider 3) launched

Sorry, should have said- there is no way to add additional memory to the Urban rider.

JC

Just thinking about this, the Urban Rider Europe must fit it all in the device and presumably its not bigger storage in the Europe than the regional version ?

TYRE

I've just ordered a zumo 220.

Whilst always preferring Tomtoms generally to Garmin it seems that Tts are not now such good value when you have to buy a power connector and this lack of a memory card slot is bizarre. When I holiday in Greece this August I do not want to be messing around with loading maps as I move across the eurozone.

How do I do routes on a Garmin? I had only just mastered using TYRE on my Rider!

Instead of pressing the convert to Tom Tom press the convert to Garmin, a doddle to use.
I do a waypoint map from google, save in Garmin files then if I plug in my little nuvi 550 it autoloads those files and by magic they appear in custom routes. :thumb2

Im happy to say that my Urban Rider (Regional as im not made of money) is doing the trick quite nicely :)

Im not a huge fan of the 2GB internal memory but for doing adventures to my (125cc) Standard its the dogs!

Managed to get it paired up with my Scala and my HTC Desire and i've not had a single issue with it so far, even on the first day (being yesterday morning) when i had an interview for a new job about 34+ miles away in Derbyshire, needless to say it sent me the right way there and back, i arrived earlier then expected AND it DID follow my instruction of 'Avoid Moterways'

So from me, all around, its a thumbs up for the standard Urban Rider

I must say I'm pleased with my Urban Rider also, I've retained the charging cradle from my v2 and sold the rest on flea-bay for £235 which paid for the Rider nicely.

There was a problem with my original v2 Rider dropped calls when linked to my Autocom.......havent had chance to test this fully yet as only made one brief call but will report back findings here in due course.

I also like the fact that you can charge it from any mini USB lead, rather than needing a bespoke TomTom charger.

Most importantly........its matt black and lacks WAY nicer than the silver colour :augie

Matt Black FTW!

I've had afew calls with the Scala and its all working quite smoothly

Hmm, that's interesting. I have an HTC Desire and a Scala Rider Q2, but without the Tomtom. I can't get them to talk to each other. Do the calls get routed via the Tomtom device before getting to the Scala Rider? That might explain how it's working for you.

Yep, the calls go via the Tomtom, the name (if it's in you phonebook) & number pops up, you can then accept or reject the call.

I've been using the Rider Urban European for about five weeks, paired to a nokia phone & Scala Solo including a 2,600 mile jaunt down the French Alps and I'm chuffed to bit with it:cool:
Having said that, I did borrow my mates V2 powered mount, which makes all the difference, on a long run, not having to worry about the battery:)

Always avoided using twat nav as I like have a pretty good sense of direction but finally gave in and got the Urban Rider Pro in early July as I was heading off to Venice via the Swiss Alps and Dolomites in August and would be doing 3500 miles

Must admit, I am a convert and was very impressed with the conversion of my TYRE routes, some of which were very complicated and on also on obscure single track mountain roads etc, the software is certainly a lot better than the Rider 2 which some of my friends had on their bikes and involved the inevitable stop and mark waypoint as visited...

The 'on the move' selection for things like fuel stop, 2d/3d and roadblocks is a big improvement on the old system and it is a lot more intuitive on re-routing and waypoints, as it seems to except 'almost' visited as being good enough to proceed without needing my intervention.

Problems I encountered were that the IQ routes irritatingly wanted to divert you on rat-runs through towns even though the main road was quiet.

The other problem was very irritating and the was when nearest petrol station was pressed on the move the unit would often spit the dummy out and shut down, completely losing all the visited waypoints etc... grrrr... always did it at the most important junctions or when the fuel was really low

In general I guess it gets a 9 out of 10 for what I needed it for :thumb

Memory limitations

I'm curious about the previous comments concerning limited memory, inability to increase memory etc. I sent a question to TomTom because I wanted to clarify whether I could use the Urban Rider with a map of the USA (a 2GB download) for a forthcoming trip. This is the answer that I received: -

Dear Mr Williams,
The reference number for your query is 100821-002128.

The urban Rider has an SD card slot so US maps can be downloaded and installed to a suitable SD ( not SDHC ) card

Can anybody who has an Urban Rider confirm whether it doers , in fact, have an SD card slot?

Absolutely not - no additional external storage. The max storage showing on my Urban rider, via my PC, is 1.84gb. I have Europe West installed and that (folder) is showing as 1.2GB in size. I can't see how you would get the full USA maps on there. I'm assuming you have to break down the maps into chunks and install as you go....not brilliant...

I think the new version of the software goes someway to mitigate this flaw though. That coupled with the matt black coating that, I think, will wear better than the silver casing of the previous version - makes it a worthwhile purchase. Not sure I would have upgraded if I hadnt managed to get the Urban Rider at such a good price from a fellow tosser and sell my Rider2 on eBay for a good figure.

I had the same issues when trying to load new maps on my GO 720 which I use on the bike, this write up explains how to get then on. Its a bit long winded but worked when I tried it:-

I have been trying to install the new maps, but they are too large. Finally got a solution from Tomtom support that worked!!!!! I now have the new map, and space to spare on the standard memory!!!!!

This is the solution:

Please note that your device have 2 GB of internal memory and the issue you are experiencing is linked to the released latest maps size. This is not affected by your device, rather by software mistake in map release. I can assume that this issue will be resolved in next map updates release.
At the moment I suggest to follow below steps to resolve installing your latest map.

When downloading a new map, we highly recommend that you connect directly to the Internet with a network cable and not use a wireless network connection. Wireless connections occasionally drop the connection, which means that your map may not download correctly. Please note that you will need a stable and unrestricted broadband connection. If you are at the end of an exchange, you may experience an unstable connection, which can interfere with the map download.

STEP 1 Create a Manual backup of your TomTom device
- Charge your unit for at least two hours (preferably via the home charger)
- Perform a reset on your device (see: TomTom, portable GPS car navigation systems - Support home - Select your product)
- Make a manual backup as shown on TomTom, portable GPS car navigation systems - Support home - Select your product (Please scroll to the bottom of the page to make a manual back up)

IMPORTANT: We advise you to follow the next steps ONLY if you have made a successful backup of your device.

STEP 2 Format your device
- Open My Computer; you will see the TomTom device as a removable disk drive.
- Right click on the TomTom device drive and choose 'Format' (Please make sure quick format is not selected)

After the Format has completed, please disconnect your TomTom device from your computer.
It will now have a red cross on the screen.

STEP 3 Open TomTom HOME
- Log in to your account with your email address and password for your TomTom account.
- On Page 2 of TomTom HOME, click on ‘Manage My TomTom -> Items on Computer’
- Tick the option for ‘Applications’
- Tick the option for ‘Voices’
- Click on ‘Remove Selected Items’

STEP 4 Install the Map only.
- Go back into main menu - page one
- Click on Update my GO
- Please tick only the map to be installed when updating device (nothing else yet)
- Click on Update and Install
- Once it's complete, click on Done
- Disconnect the device by clicking on the Blue Eject button in the bottom right

Once installed, we will need to remove some files from the device.

- Go into Start -> Computer
- Open My Computer; you will see the TomTom device as a removable disk drive.
- Double-click to open the TomTom drive and locate your map folder- this will be named after the map you have downloaded, e.g. Western Europe etc. Double-click to open the folder
- In this folder, there are several files named cspeech_XXX.dat where XXX represents the country.
- Please delete all cspeech files except cspeech_GBR.dat which you will need to keep.

After above is complete

STEP 5 Install the Application + voices + all other items

- Reset your TomTom device as shown on TomTom, portable GPS car navigation systems - Support home - Select your product
- Connect it to your computer and THEN turn it on
- HOME will now search for updates automatically. If not please click on “Update my Device”
- A list of updates should appear
- If there is a TomTom application + voices etc .. please ensure those are ticked
- Click on 'Update and Install'
- Once complete click on Done and your device should reboot itself
- Once it connects again it will look for more updates
- When you have a new list of updates please click on Back
- Disconnect the device by clicking on the Blue Eject button in the bottom right

Your TomTom device should now be up and running with your new map installed.

If you get stuck on this email or you have any further questions, please let me know and I will be more than happy to help you further.

I was very pleased to have a play with the TomTom Rider 3 and learn that the mapping on the new device is ridiculous. It goes all the way out to Turkey for Europe and encludes what looks like the whole of Russia, so you can navigate all the way out to Magadan if you fancy "doing a Ewan".
