so at last the kids are old enough to fly with mum to spain on there own, that means that next july i get to ride down from surrey to spain near denia.
got about three and a half weeks total so plan to ride from calais to millau the first day and then spend 4 days to go through andorra and the pyrenees and then onto destination.looking forward to riding the mountains i usally fly over, roll on next july:thumb2

Sounds like a good trip to me.. definitely something to look forward to then eh :thumb

:beerjug:

yep its weired how looking forward to planning routes etc cheers you up on a winters day

yep i like it down there ,the villa is actually in jalon or xalo as its now known

Some lovely roads in that area. Up around Guadalest is great.

Calais to Millau is quite trek. Why not split it into two - an easier day on the autoroutes day 1, then on N and D roads to enjoy the scenery and day 2?

yes robin the mountain road from jalon to guadalest is cracking, cant wait to do it on the bike.i wanted to do the first day down to milau so ive got max time in andorra and the pyrenees and do the n260 eastwards then mouch down south eiter on the coast road or inland, that bit i havent deceided yet.dont want to get clogged up on the n332 to much.

Andorra - over-rated, crowded, ugly shithole!

Heading down: the road from Lleida/Lerida to Tortosa is a stunning fast road if you then want to follow the Med coast down. Personally I wouldn't - I would head from Lledia to Teruel in a sort of straight line - smaller roads, lovely mountain scenery and very quiet. Via Caspe, Villarluengo, Cantavieja for lunch, Villaroya then Teruel. A stunning day's ride. (I've never ridden further South than Teruel so you're on your own after that!)

robin, thanks for that tips gratefully received:thumb2,was just going to ride through andorra really to tick it off the list,i think your right after that, head inland sounds good to me.its a pity its such a long way off though:D

funny how things change, now the wife is coming on the gsa and kids flying with grandparents:thumb2
so have just booked a room at the riders rest and now will take a four day ride down to the villa.so a question is the n260 worth doing along a substantial length?.i want to go from riders rest to millau and then drop down to andorra and along the pyrenees but which way east or west, and whats the best scale of map to show the interesting roads clearly?

Don't let the nay sayers spoil your dream, I rode through Andorra a couple of years ago and would do so again. Stay on the N22 toward Pas de la Case instead of taking the tunnel / peage. Have a look at the route on Google Maps.

Here's a short clip from that trip in June 2010.

I suggest going down through Andorra then picking up the N260 to Sabinanigo. Then carry on to Jaca. I've ridden the A1205 towards Huesca - it eventually becomes the A132. Excellent road. From Huesca blast down through Zaragoza to Teruel. I've stayed in the Parador there - not one of the classics but very comfortable.

From there I would head towards Cuenca through the awesome Tierra Muerta (Dead Lands). I once got totally lost on a track in there which seemed to be going nowhere with Juniper bushes crowding in all around

Finally found my way out in a totally different place than I expected? Seriously an area of unexpected villages, caves, etc.

Cuenca is a fab place.

Blast down to Albacete and then home.

I stayed at the Ibis Hotel in Viella last August and there only seemed to be about 10 people there. We had the pool on the roof to ourselves (me and wife) it was like swimming in the mountains. Wasn't expensive and the bike was safe in an underground car park. Bit weird sitting in the bar with people smoking as there isn't any anti-smoking law there. Weirder still as the Andorrans have
one of the longest life-expectancies in Europe.

Yes, but that 5Km or so is the ONLY bit of good road in Andorra - the rest of the road to Spain is like riding down Kensington High Street !
And like you say, if you take the tunnel, you miss it all.
You'd be far better hanging a left before Andorra & taking the Col De Puymorens over to Puigcerda, then into Spain on the N260 :thumb

ok thanks will check it out on the map, have to say need to do andorra/kensington just to cross it of the list, looks like the n260 is a must do though:thumb2

Having said that, Pas De La Casa is worth using as a lunch stop - there's loads of cheap restaurants if you're into Spag Bol, fondue etc. - and whilst you're there - ride over the top, turn round, do it again, and THEN do the Col de Puymorens - then you've got the best of all worlds, and it will take you no more time than waiting in the customs queue to get out of Andorra into Spain :D

They didn't stop us at either end.

Just checked my notes. Rode from Prats de Mollo la Preste up the D115 over the Col de L'arbres which becomes the C38 in Spain. Famous as one of the Tour de France summits but infamous as the site of a massacre in 1938 when the Fascists caught up with a column of refugees and soldiers escaping over to France at the end of the civil war. There are some info. boards which tell the story - horrific.

Continue on the C38 right along to Sant Joan de las Abadesses where you can pick up the N260.

I followed that to Puigcerda then crossed back over to France to go along the N20 towards Andorra. Ignore the tunnel and go over the Porte Puymorens. You can then enter Andorra but ignore the tunnel there too. Then straight into the shopping paradise/ shithole.

Over the top to Vielle then out the other side to Urgell and pick up the N260 again. Don't forget to fill up with juice in Andorra as the petrol's much cheaper there.

I can post my Garmin route from Sobres if you want it.

Incidentally trivia question WITHOUT RESORTING TO GOOGLE. ... who is the ruler of the Principality of Andorra?:augie

thanks chaps all good info and welcomed, btw people mention queues at the customs points, whats the form wait or filter to the front?
