Too much engine oil - I haven't damaged anything?

Before I ask the question, promise not to LAUGH!

In my haste to get ready to go to West Meon yesterday, I think I put too much engine oil in the engine. Does this cause "much" damage? Do I need to take it to the garage to get it sorted? Or will it sort itself out as it "consumes" oil?

The glass window shows it to be full. Completely full.

Any tips?

Don't Panic!

Remove the oil filter then drain and reinstall. Removing the filter will not cause the sump to empty.

OR

Drain all the oil and refill with a measured amount. Off the top of my head [and on my 11] that should be 3.5l without a filter change.
I normally fill with 3.3l, run the engine then check. It normally require no more oil. I too found 3.5l tends to give an overfill reading.

I believe it is possible to damage the engine by overfilling, but I bet you'll be OK.

Normally the excess oil is ejected into the area below the airbox where it can be drained via the plug in the near-side, rear corner.

Russ.
