Too Much Oil

High oil level - been there, done that.

If the level is visible with the engine running I wouldn't panic you're probably 250-300ml overfilled, but for peace of mind its probably best to let the engine cool then drain a wee bit out via the sump drain plug (wear gloves, oil is a known carcinogen).

I would not normally advocate putting drained oil back into an engine but if you need to, be sure to use a spotless container and clean around the sump plug before removing to ensure no grit etc can get washed down into the oil you collect.

There's the source of your problem. That oil is thicker than 20-50 and therefore each litre takes up more room in the crankcase. So it will show up higher on the sight glass

Do not worry about it - When you put in the bmw specified quantity of oil it fills up above the oil sight glass.

A mug full of oil over is absolutely nothing to be concerned about.

Just back from the pub....everything seems much clearer now...is that normal ?

I will check it again in the morning and I think I will end up draining some out.

Am suprised I have not got more more flack, even my wife called me a 'numpty'.

By the way the mug size was a large tea mug type afair.....but this is just a guestimate based on what was in the bottle of oil pre 'filling' as opposed to what was left in the oil bottle 'post-filling'.

drop the lot into a very clean container then fill correctly save the excess for topping up

Drop it out and fill to correct level. Its easier than blown seals.
