Took my Dad's bike for a ride today

Since I'm hoping to pick up an 1150GS in the next month, I took my Dad's 1150 out today. I was very impressed with it, particularly:

• Braking - Not sure if it's the Brembos, the weight, the front end or all three, but braking is incredibly easy. No need for anything other than 2 fingers, very reassuring.
• Torque - my word. Years on Jap fours did not prepare me for this. I'll have to learn gear selection all over again, especially with the sharp engine braking.
• Stability - It seems to be unsettled by nothing, again I assume because of the weight and front end, easily chucking it about narrow lanes. Lovely.

Can't bleedin' wait...

I hope you enjoy your new bike as and when it appears... as well as much lower insurance costs, Compared to most bikes that seem to be top of the "I WANT" list for the average 23yr old.

seems to me from all i've been told.. that the cost of insurance is the biggest mountain to climb for the average 'younger biker'

You'll soon get used to stupid comments from mates like: "I'm too young to ride a BMW" - FFS I hear this all the time from 40yr olds on another forum (that will remain nameless)

Tom my daughter's friend is 20 and he has a new 1200gs (Yes Dad has money) saying that he's a great lad,had sports bike before but thinks the gs is the best bike so far,but he's not had a go on my 1150gsa yet! Silver one

Iwas slow to overcome the BMW stereotype too. Spent all my life's earnings on keeping Italian steeds going - then got pointed to an R100Rs years ago by a bike journo friend who reckoned it would be a good buy for me - cheap to buy, cheap to run, cheap to insure (classic insurance), fast, easy to live with (but broad shoulders needed) and extremely well put together with proper livability design features built in - not go faster and break faster design features
Having seen the light there is no going back - like I said when I got the first RS - I wish I had discovered BMWs 25 years ago It would have saved me a fortune. Your girls friend is a lucky chap indeed to have discovered them so early in his riding life
