Help please
I have just got an old 1100GS (96) and I am preparing a shopping list to get it looking fit for purpose. As usual with old bikes the tool kit is long gone does anyone have a list of what tools should be in the tray (hex key sizes etc) its fun trying to guess what should fit in each slot but it wont be fun on a dark wet night when I dont have the right size hammer.
Thanks

heres a start. http://www.xmission.com/~wendell/R1100GS/accessories.html if you buy a hex set - be sure to get a 7mm which is an odd size often missed from simpler sets.

other thing of note is a deep 13mm socket - needed to do a gearbox oil change. plus the tool thingie for the engine oil filter.

sparkplug cap puller. get one from motorworks if/when you order a service kit. they can prob supply various other missing bits.

I'm sure someone will be along with more suggestions before long

I too have an old ('94) 1100.

The most used tools in my box are a full set of 3/8" drive hex bits, a quality set of long ball end 'allen' keys and a set of 3/8" drive deep sockets. And a torque wrench.

Odd what motobiker says about the 13mm socket for GB oil change - all my drain and fill plugs are socket head hex (perhaps a previous owner changed one on my bike...)

My bike came with an almost complete BMW tool set, to which i've added a few bits and pieces, however I do all my routine maintenance with the stuff above.

Get down to halfords and get a laser tools oil filter wrench (1100 and 1150 the same one) nothing else will do the job easily :thumb

regards bisbee

I have most of the stuff you mentioned but its all a bit underused cos my thunderbird is mainly torx.
On closer investigation today a lot of the bolts & fasteners are well rusty and I suspect there may be some skinned knuckles and mutterings from my garage this weekend.

Its true enough.. was what immediately came to mind as a specific 'socket' i had to go out and buy. I can't say that its standard or not. (for your bike or mine)

A lot can happen in the intervening years

btw - it only gets used on the drain plug. the fill takes a hex key.
