Hi
I will be trading in my 2017 Rallye and Vario cases, for a new GSA on Friday. Suffice to say I feel very fortunate and excited. I think I got a great deal on my new bike. All I think I need for it are a headlight guard and luggage: advice and experience welcome. I am not adverse to buying through eBay, or even AliExpress etc, second hand is fine as well!

Buying the bike, has left the bank account drained, I wonder what experience and advice people can share re less expensive top box options for me: definitely want one that’s big enough for a helmet and for Mrs Gingerbiker to sit against, when she is on pillion. I can’t afford the BMW offering!

The bike comes with the GSA racking on, so I know I may need a mounting plate for other makes of box.

When I have been looking at panniers I have noticed the LOMO offer looks great value and has good reviews. Is anyone using these successfully without an additional mounting plate? SW Motech, have a plate that I may get to help keep the right hand side away from the exhaust. Any other systems I should consider?

Both of the above will be for use in the UK and a solo European tour this summer. For day to day use I have a small bag for a lock, or use a Kriega backpack for laptop/ work commutes. The LOMO panniers won’t be staying on the bike year round.

Hello and welcome,

I’m a big fan of the Givi range of boxes, I had a V46 but now changed that for a Trekker. It does require an additional mounting plate and I’m now in the loop of Monokey examples.
I have Lone Rider semi rigid bags and can’t fault them….

Bumot do panniers and top boxes to fit the OEM BMW racks.

Givi Trekker 42 or Dolomiti 46 are both great choices that I've used on my Africa Twin (I had a plastic Givi on my GS). A few friends of mine use the Lomo panniers and they are solid. Not sure what support they would need on the GS though. If it's the GSA you're getting, a set of Aliexpress crash bar bags (or the Lomo bags) will add a few litres for essentials like tools or gloves.

I've got the Lomo bags on my 2018 GSA, I also wanted something cheap and they work ok without any support on the right side, there is a curve to it but it's manageable.

I also have the Lomo crash bar bags which fit really well on a 1250GSA but less well on a 1200.

Depending on how quick you want a top box, i'll probably be selling my GSA top box (BMW aluminium one) in June some point - i'll be sticking up a post for that on here when its time.

I had Givi top box before the official BMW one i bought 2nd hand from here. It fitted just as well - i had both the 42 & 58L versions.

Panniers; i have the Lone Rider Semi Rigid luggage. Great bit of kit to use and fit with no issues to the BMW racks.
