Hello,
2018 Gsa rallye.with black aluminium panniers.
Any recommendations for a back box please.
Not 100% sure about the oem black ally back
box (size and looks).

Is it worth going to the hassle of fitting a Vario box?

Thanks in anticipation

Tony.

Check out the Givi Trekker Outback......it is a good bit bigger than the OEM box and doesn't look too dissimilar.

you have the givi on 42 ad 58l and also the kappa (givi spinoff) on 48l

Here's a picture of the black Givi Trekker Outback with Black BMW panniers.
I know mine is a Hexhead but the side panniers on the LC are the same boxes....just the other way around.

I have the 42 litre Givi Trekker Outback top box on my 2017 GSA and it is excellent. Takes a full face helmet fine and still fit a few bits around it.
I bought the inner bag last year for a trip to the Lakes, nothing leaked, good size and very convenient not having to take the box off.
Box is strong and secure, very good quality in my opinion.
I'm currently looking for panniers and not sure to go for Givi with a rack or Bumot that fits on to the GSA racks.

Thanks very much for all your replies.
Plenty to think about.
Some good options I didn’t know about.
Cheers.

Or for something completely different consider the Shad 58X which is adjustable and can be expanded in two steps to a maximum of 58L, but in its minimum size setting is quite slim and streamlined.

Did consider the Shad 58x, liked the idea, but if you want to use it to keep your helmet every time you leave the bike ( my case) you have to have it expanded to the max all the time, so went for the 48l kappa, could have bought the 58l but I don´t like the way it looks on the bike, looks like a chest.
By the way you should take a look at your exhaust, looks like it´s falling off :D

Fair enough - the SH58X can be a bit fiddly sometimes to extend, though to be fair usually only takes a few seconds.

To go a bit off-topic, you may be pleased to hear that my poor hacked GS has been returned to standard and had its original exhaust refitted! :D

However this is only because I have traded it in for a 1250 which will also be subjected to some exhaust mods so that I can retain my Shad panniers. This time I am aiming to have a spare GS exhaust modded to fit at a lower angle - cut and paste artist's impression below. Better?

I have two boxes, the BMW OEM 35l and the Givi 58L Outback. They are both excellent boxes, and each of them has their pro's and cons.

35L OEM box, is what I use when riding domestic and solo.

Pros:
- large enough for solo riding
- May use the BMW key.
- May be opened without using the key
- Does not need a bracket to stay on the bike.
Cons:
- To small for a helmet. (well, actually some helmets will fit, barely). However, when riding domestic I usually leave the helmet on the mirror.

Givi Outback:
- Prefer it when riding with the Boss.
- Roomy
- Mounted further back gives more room to the passenger.
- It will easy hold two helmets.
Cons:
- If riding solo (abroad) it's more sensitive to wind
- Needs an extra bracket in order to fit.
- You need a key to open it, Always..
- Mounted further back than the OEM case, this affects the CG negative. However I'm compensating by going on a bananasplit diet every spring. But it will affect the balance of the bike if you push it hard (which is not the case when the boss rides along)
- The 58L prevents the lids of the panniers to swing open freely. However, opening both locks on the lid and lift it up works fine.

And slim is a good thing. The OEM height ones will do you some serious damage when you get rear ended and smack your back on it. I use the lower height Bumot which is plenty for ride outs, although I wouldn't want to have an accident with that on either. Touring I use the panniers and a roll bag on the rear rack/pillion seat for this reason.
