I have been after a top box for my 1150GS for the last couple of years, I have the adventure panniers but a standard GS bike. I gather that the rear rack is different between the two models.

I want to put on an adventure top box (i don't have one yet but I am constantly scouring the site and ebay). I hope then in the mean time to build or have built a rack that I can mount one of the panniers on to turn it into a topbox. The only problem is that I have not seen the mounting kit for the adventure top box so I don't know exactly how it fits to the rear frame.

I am thinking of getting a plate made up with the tube bent to form a top loop and a lower mounting loop welded to plate that can be screwed in place instead of the normal 1150GS rear rack. If anyone here has any ideas -or- if they have done it in the past then I would be grateful to see how - considering second-hand topbox racks alone are about £85 + postage on Motobins. Ideally, I would like to see what the standard BMW GSA rear topbox rack looks like and where it is mounted

If it works then I will post diagrams back on the site for anyone else who is interested.

Hmmm, I wwonder is it worth the effort.
Long term (ie, when you do manage to track down a top box) the platform you make will probably be obsolete, as you are likely to be able to get the entire plate along with the box (not much use for one without t'other). I paid £175 for both early last year and that was a fairly good price if I recall.......so not cheap. But the plate is quite a piece (or two) of work, so will be difficult to replicate. As I dont have the panniers, I cannot comment on how easy one will be to mount/use as a topbox. If you want some pics of the topbox mount, I can do tomorrow?

The adventure top box rack will bolt straight onto the standard GS rear end. No mods needed.

GSA Top Box on GS

I've done this and the GSA plate doesn't bolt straight onto the GS rack, but you can get it to fit.

The front of the plate goes where the grab handle goes and then you need a peice of ali plate about 150mm that goes underneath the GS rack and is bolted to the plate.

Easy job, mines been on for about 6 months no problem

:)

Get yourself a GSA Topbox bracket and then you will be able to use any of the three boxes as a topbox.

Thanks for the pics TJ, that is exactly what I am looking for - It's quite hard to tell, but have you got a standard GS end or is it a GSA? If it is a standard one then I will continue to trawl the web and the FS section for the mounting kit and use one of my panniers - Or - see if I can get a box and kit for a reasonable price.

I have a standard GS. I got the bracket off the site only thing was that it didn't have the fixing bracket underneath. I have used the one from the standard Topbox(Black one) with no problems, you can just see it above the taillight in pic 3. One day I will get my act together and make an Ali one.
