Top box update.............

I know, the land rovers dirty (and itll probably stay that way), the number plates missing (snapping a fence post), grass needs cutting, weeds are growing ect.....

I quite pleased with the end result. Now for the panniers........

Thanks to all those who sent me advice, especially Vern who had some good ideas and sent me some different types of locks to those I tried. Unfortunatly due to the fluteing I put in the box (mainly for asthetic reasons, but I thougth it would add strength as well), I coudnt use the lock I wanted to.

I now know that the box doesnt need the fluting (the panniers wont either), the box is very strong. The next mold wont have any fluting in, will be larger and have better locks. Although the box shown will take a helmet easily.

Vern also suggested one out of carbon fibre would look good, yet to try that. I'm going to try and mold some carbon firbre hand gaurds first (with an integral wind deflector, ie like to TT add on you can buy). However I'm lead to think its hard to do CF without getting bubbles in the weave. I'll see how I get on.

Nice Steve :thumb

How is it fixed to the mounting plate ? I am guesing it's all fiberglass using a black gel coat to start off ? What's the weight like and have you tried it at speed yet ?

PS Want to sell me your baglux - it'll go very nicely on my 1100 :D

Looks well

I Sorta thought negative thoughts , initally.
But i like the look of that . It looks very well.
How have you sealed the Lid and Base ?
I have Rubber seal , similar to a car door , its not cheap though
it costs €5 per Metre. If you wish .
How have you attached the Box to the Rear , Thru the Sub frame.
I have had to consider my Girl friend whe i made my top box
She is constantly asleep , so i had to make mine Super Strong.
Good luck.

PS . If you think i could be of any assistance Pm Me,

With a bit of luck the pictures will be in order (if they appear at all), otherwise it'll be a bit confusing.

The box is made out of fibreglass. I made the mold, put acoat of gel coat in (it was clear as I didnt know what colour to use, as I intend to change the colour of the bike from yellow to something else).

I havent weighed it, but I used less than 1.5kg of resin and the matting, so I am guessing it is less than 2kg total - it certainly feels light.

The top box is mounted onto a slightly modified Givvi rack that came with the bike:

I cut the catch off, as it got in the way and would have made the mold harder to do, and I didnt need it. The box uses the two front clips and is held on at athe back with 2 M6 bolts and nylocks - it isnt going to move. The two clips on the front of the rack clip into two 4mm alumiun plates that are molded into the box:

There are also two 4mm aluminium strengthener plates molded into the box itself:

The seal is just a piece of draft excluder I had lieing around

The lock is just a cheap cam lock I got off ebay (notice number plate back on LR, still dirty though):

The fluting was put on as I wanted the topbox to match with panniers I am gong to make. I initially thought the panniers would need some strengthening - hence the flutes. However it made the mold very hard to use, trying to get the fibreglass to stay in the conrners was a pain. So i am goint to make another mold (slightly bigger) without the flutes- it is so strong it doesnt need them.

Although this box has a cheap cam lock, I want to use a lock that Vern sent to me, only I am unable to locate any more and I am having trouble rying to contact Vern at the moment. Anyone know where these can be bought from?

It has the name Takega written on it.

I read in the AdvRider website that the Givvi rack is supposed to have some from of support at the back to prevent the rack snapping. Anyone any picutres of what it is supposed to look like?
