Can anyon tell me if BnW do a larger top box than the standard for the 800 GS ?? I sometimes prefer the option to travel light if its for 1 or 2 nights only..standard one seems to lack height ..
Buy a Givi top box of Ebay and save a lot of money. I now have a choice of three top boxes depending on the amount Im carrying. I have 30L box for normal use. This takes a helmet, gloves and other small items, or enough for a weekend away in a B&B. I can fit one of my E36 panniers as a top box or clip on the massive E46 box, both of which take a massive amount of gear.
I only need the panniers for two weeks a year and rarely fit the large top boxes, I prefer to use a smaller box and strap a bag to the pillion seat.
The larger boxes look out of place on the bike but still look better then the square BMW thing. An entire set of top boxes can be purchased second hand for about £25.00 each. http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=198227
I have used the above mounting plate for six months and many trips without any problems.
Sooty09 has the right idea I use a givi top box with a SW Motech rack! I find the givi box allot more usable than the bmw stuff and I had it from the previous bike neway.
The SW motech rack is a nice piece of kit to. Very well made and quick release to so you can mount other stuff too!
If you're going along the Givi top box route, which is what I have, why not buy the correct mounting plate so that you can still use the pillion seat / take the seat off?
Never understood the logic behind the size of the vario top box on the 1200GS and 800GS. I would have thought the compressed size would be what the expanded currently is, then the expanded would really be useful. It's not that I want to stick loads of heavy gear in the top box, but if there's anything at all already in the box, it's practically impossible to then place a helmet it in.
