I am just back from Germany and just for a laugh decided to test top speed on the auotbahn (who doesn't!). Anyway answers on a post card pls but first here's the spec:

Speed according to GPS on an F800GS
2 men on board, avg 14 stone each
Tall BM screen and TT riser
The least aerodynamic TT ali panniers available with totally flat faces and ortleib bags on top
BMW top box also fully loaded

Answer to follow after a few take a guess....

I haven't had the luxury of riding the autobahns (sp?), but at 3am the english motorways are just as appropriate...

...well maybe not, but with a loan 1200 and no police it certainly seems the best time ensure the speedo worked pasts 70mph :augie

I did that once on the newly opened section of M60 motorway around Manchester. It was 3am and not a soul about. So I opened up the throttle (my car at the time) Then I saw the blue lights behind me:eek:

I thought... thats it... instant ban... I must have slowed to a 40mph crawl resigned to the fact I was nicked. As the Volvo patrol car approached it drove straight past me

as I got around the next curve I saw a scene of carnage. car wreckage everywhere and multiple police vehicles. Some pretty rough characters were grappling with the police in what looked like a drugs bust / RTA.

Those flashing blue lights in my rear view mirror basically saved me from piling into an accident around the next corner.

So be aware in the small hours that anything could potentially be in your path... including nocturnal animals like foxes and badgers. :blast

Aye, I have had that when in the car, put my foot down on a stretch of road in town... blues flash but luckily he went straight past *phew*.

*Back to the bike* I made a point of sustaining the speed I was travelling only for a few seconds, by the time I got to the speed there were some roadworks ahead... not convinced that the best way to return a loan bike is with some poor builders blood all over it, I backed off, don't need to "illegally" experience that kind of speed ever again... Well, not on a R1200 at least ;)

That said I've noticed the 800 is very stable when two up and fully loaded. Also when it gets above 80mph it takes on a new feel. It is a surprisingly versatile bike :clap

Have to agree, it does real stable even upto and beyond a ton, Very happy with the choice of bike although i have not full throttled it on an autobahn!
