Gents and ladies. Ive been reading about top speeds on the 1150 gs.
Figures of 121mph 125mph and 129 mph are talked about.
Just this morining my 2000 r1150gs would not go over around an indicated 115mph. WHERE ARE MY LAST 10MPH GONE? I know I'm a bit of a fat c*nt at 17+stone but what sort of top speeds should a bike with only 16k miles on it be doing. Some details remus can and y piece + newish k&n filter.

Of course this was on a rich uncles private race track, goes without saying really. And i know thats not what the gs is about there are better bkes for speed etc. Just wondering where to start looking. Cheers in advance.

What colour is it (the same people who no doubt talk about speeds over 115mph will tell you colour makes a difference)?

Try a Gixer or a Blade ..........................

Seriously For speed you need power = Rice burner or Ducati or Tirumph or S1000RR

a GS is a bout Torque less, changing gears for overtakes etc maintaining speed on long inclines and PLAYING on the twisties

Not many people here have private race tracks where we spend time at above 100 so we don't really think about it.

serious question lads. just wondering peoples experience of top speeds!

I think in a roundabout way that's what they were saying Top Speed is subjective and not what the GS is about

Go find a really twisty hilly bit of road or trail and go have a pelt up that on a GS

Then come down and swop for a Gixxer or ??? and go do it again which would you rather have?

If you are really worried tho check your FD ratio a changed one could allow better hill starts etc but reduce top end capabilities!

Most clocks over read significantly and not always consistently between the same models - my 1100 shows 5 or 6 mph high at 70ish. Then you have to factor in different tyre types / state of wear, accessories, heavy, drag inducing bolt on tat, luggage, rider weight etc, etc.

So unless you're comparing like for like, it's a pretty irrelevant comparison. And there's not much future in thrashing the nuts of a boxer twin with the throttle pinned to the stop, it's not what they're about.

I had a gps reading of 105mph from my 1100 with full luggage on a deserted Scottish A road. It got there pretty smartly and was nice and solid while there but didn't feel like it had a lot left. I have no idea how this compares to other 1100's, nor do I care ;)

It also sups fuel like a good'un at sustained high speeds...

Gentlemen thank you for ur replys. I spend most of my time well under the ton, so guess its no biggie. happy & safe riding.

I expect it's just down to aerodynamic drag, which really makes a big difference once you get above 80 mph, and gets worse the faster you go, and the barn-door human-parachute aeros of the GS don't help. :rob

GS riders who've seen 130+ may have slippier screens, snugger leathers, smaller heads etc. or simply had a tailwind at the time.

To go fast, bikes need to be streamlined as well as powerful, which is why so many sportsbikes are turd-shaped. :augie

Had 135 on the GPS in France, but that was going down a shallow hill on the motorway with a 70k bike (so just worn in! :D ) stability was pants and you could feel it not liking the weight (could not recover fast enough), engine was not red lines but after a couple of miles and a bit of speed weave it was time to bring it back to a more sensible 80-90 on the clock (not GPS).

Speed is not where it's at, I've just sold a second generation K1200GT that could do 'proper' speed because it was sterile! :eek

Here's a vid of the run that decided me to sell it, the wobble is the front wheel trying to come up on transitions, but it felt slow. In a convoy I was considerably ahead after 5 mins but thought I was holding them up (not spending time looking in mirrors!) when we stopped I had no chicken strip and had apparently almost ground the panniers, oh and the front tyre was shagged in that 10 mins!

I'd have rather been on the GS doing half the speed so it was being sold before we got the ferry home :thumb2

Get a rice burner or something cheap as a second bike if you want speed. :nenau
