On the Autobahn en route to the Nurburgring last month I found out that hitting the rev limiter in 6th gear equates 139mph on the GPS and 143mph on the speedo :augie.

Most I have had indicated was 2005 trip to Alps when my mate rode off the side of a mountain!Max speed indicated on the 2610 was 126.?? MPH
That was fully loaded tankbag, panniers and topbox :thumb

in france

following a merc sl 500 convertible (in his slip stream) got it off the clock and hit the limiter in top...scared the crap out of me as I thought the engine had gone pop!!

Without the slipstream I reckon you'd struggle to get much more then 130.

She did between 136 and 139 mph on a German Autobahn two years ago. Without side cases. Can't be more specific, at that speed you tend not to look at the clocks for a long time, and everything shakes a bit.

What surprised me, is that I hit the rev limiter. I thought she wouldn't do more than the officially announced top speed because of lousy aerodynamics, not because the rev limiter would cut in.
At that speed it's actually a bit scary, because the bike decelerates with a noticeable judder, then accelerates, etc. At the first judder I feared the worst ('Why did I try this ?' :blast) but then realised what was happening - a look at the revs helped. :D

I've not been in that speed zone since then. You just wanna know what yer bike can do, don't ya ? :augie

Two years back on my 08 GS12 on a week long tour of Europe and the 'Route Napoleon' on the way back, it had been run in hard and fast and was running so sweetly throughout. :)

As all the others in the group were on sportsbikes I had already experienced the rev limiter once or twice whilst sparring! Everyone was commenting on the abilities of the GS, most of them once they had caught up.:augie

Last day, last leg dash back to Calais on the A16 I had it on the limiter in top with Panniers, not extended, BMW small tank bag, Kreiga tail pack and screen in highest setting - 220KPH on the Garmin Quest. I think that equates to 138mph, I think that is what BMW state as well, and had it not been for the limiter she was keen to give more. Everyone was impressed by the GS on that trip and some have now reviewed their choice of bikes.

This year in France I saw 133mph on my 2010 GS12 (Tom Tom Rider), had not even thought I was anywhere near flat out and was not on a top speed run, just a quick blast away from the pack! Will be back to France later on the year and might by then know what's what.:mmmm

It's not just about straight-line speed though, is it? I think I discovered the limitations of my '09 bike recently. I had occasion to pursue a mate on his VFR VTec on an undisclosed stretch of twisty tarmac at a sustained 110 mph - the GPS recorded a v-max of 112 mph.

At those speeds and even with the ESA set on Sport + luggage, I could feel the suspension beginning to "heave" as the bike became vertical on the transitions for left to right to left lean.

Got a GPS indicated 119 on my fully loaded 850GS in Germany recently, probably a bit more to give but it was definately running out of puff. I guess that without the panniers and my lardy arse on it, it would easily do an indicated 125+

Chipped, Remus end pipe and Wunderlich headers all proably helped a little. Can't remember if I was on 98 or 95 RON.

I think approx 125ish mph. But mechanical sympathy got to me BEFORE I could finish my top speed run (that and Mrs Miff poking me in the kidneys and screaming something (I think I'd woken her up)).

I'm quite happy ragging a 4cyl bike, but I don't like doing the same to something with only 2 big pistons flapping about.

However, I have a Les Wassall HID setup to fit, so that should make the bike quicker........ It'll be lighter...... :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Whilst out for an evening bimble this evening, i ended up at Stonehenge.
Where i joined the A303 heading north, just past the Amesbury junction/roundabout i opened her up 2005 12k miles going uphill and what a surprise i had :eek 124 MPH as i reached the brow and still pulling!! feck.
now take clock error out and that's still way more than i expected :bow :bow.
:bow :bow

i wonder what you naughty boys have seen on the clock.
[private road of course]

I disconnected the rev limiter and put 99 RON into my 2010GS and it went off the speedo - so mine's the fastest at over 140mph - I reckon it must be making at least 120bhp :-P

132 on GPS just me and ran out of road. I wouldn't say it was a very pleasant experience and not because of the speed. I own an exup that will do at least another 40mph on top of that and it feels much more stable. Different machines entirely though and I know which one I take on holiday.

Engineer, how do you disconnect the rev limiter? its part of the ECU programming isn't it?

Not impressed!

I did 110mph on a Vincent in 1949 and that was easy. However I am more pleased that I can still cruise happily at 100 mph (160 kph) on my 1200 Gs
