Topbox mounting - alternatives??

Duuno really! I sat on the pillion with it on the centre stand before and after, and the Hattech grabs seem to fall to hand more readily, and the profile seems to be more comfy, it's round and not triangular like original, but I s'pose it's a very personal thing - and the boss hasn't been on it yet, (though unless I tell her she probably won't notice the difference).

Hattech do different plates for different applications - mine's a "German1" for the BMW box, and I think "Italy" is for Givi boxes - just google HATTECH for their website.

half the fun is small projects like that professional looking plate, looks as if a lot of thought and effort has gone into that,in fact make some more and sell them on here, sure you would do well.Pick up my 1150gs tomorrow, laminate sheet for a fiver will be turned into a headlight protector, stainless steel grille sheet from scrapyard, free, will be turned into grille protectors, its all part of the fun.Hopefully my attempts will look as good as yours if not i can always buy the aftermarket stuff

I don't want to rain on your parade - even though the Hattech rack looks a nice product - but I can see two potential problems in putting the rack further back and lower than the original.
Firstly is pillion comfort. With the original rack the top case acts as a back rest for the pillion, especially with the addition of the comfort pad. The Hattech version looks too low and too far back for this - unless the pillion puts their backside further back over the edge of the back seat.
Secondly, increasing the overhang over the rear lights will mask them to following tesco lorry drivers. They ride something like 10 - 15 feet above the road and are therefore looking down on you. With the top case overhanging more than standard and sitting lower down, the rear lights would be less visible.:blast

The box sits at the same lateral position as when on the original rack, ie. it's no further back - just lower.
