I think it's a bit mean that BMW don't fit anything to the F800 to mount luggage on the back and i really needed to mount a box to mine so I made something myself. I cut down some alloy sheet and cut four hols to line up with the two bolt that hold on the hand-rails and the two at the rear of the tail. I had to have steel spacers made up so the plate sat level but there was really nothing to it. The plate had four more holes drilled for mounting my box, I have a double sized one, the metal ones are not big enough for me.

Of course now my box is mounted you can't see any of it.

Very similar to mine although mine has more holes and slots in it. I'm on the second incarnation - the first was too thin and cracked after extensive use of a Vario topbox on it. The second is 4mm thick and hasn't yet had any big loads.

I wasn't about to pay anyone the sort of money they wanted for a bit of flat ally plate - mine was free apart from my time and effort (not that much really) and a bit of electricity. Might post a photo too but I think "a bit of flat ally plate with some holes in" describes it perfectly. :D

Mine is about 4mm thick too. Seems pretty tough so far and will be taking some heavy loads so fingers crossed. Mine is also a plate with holes in but at least I made it myself instead of giving all my money to Nippy Norman for exactly the same thing.

Can either of you two give me the accurate measurements for the holes and also measurements for the spacers you machined. Cheers, Locky.

I'll measure the hole spacing later. "Machining" is however too technical for the spacers I made - I found some thick walled steel pipe and used that, but to get the length I'd have to strip it off the bike, which I'm reluctant to do. A lot of my fitting consisted of guesswork followed by adjustment with a file...

My spacers were 35mm long and the same diameter as the washers fitted to the bolts at the bottom. Pretty straightforward to make, even if you don't have the ideal tools. As for spacing, I didn't save the measurements but off the top of my head the centres between the top ones were 11cm, 11cm down to the bottom two and I think about 8cm gap on the bottom two but double check on your own bike.

Now with Tomtom rider fitted.

Unfortunately after all the effort of fitting it the unit won't charge!
