Hi all,

Before I move back to the UK I want to buy some Torque wrenches here in the US. Tools are a little cheaper. I am thinking of buying two of them,

one beam version - 0-150ft.lbs 3/8" - 0-204 Nm

one click version - 25-250 in.lbs 3/8" - 2.8-28 Nm

Will this cover the range on the GS?

Do I need any other specialty stuff like Torx bit set?

cheers

200Nm will cover the most of it. Pivot bolts are 150Nm, and there's not much bolts having more than this.

But usually one key isn't good to cover from 0 to 200Nm. On very sensitive low Newton-metre levels use special keys made for some 0 to 50Nm or less, coz those 200Nm big basterds keys show shiite and faulty torque measure on low Nm levels, altough they are corrct on 50+Nm range, well at least on my experiences...

So having the second 0-28Nm key is excellent choice. You have what you need.

I have one torque wrench that covers 10-60Nm and I've never needed more, but I've never had to work on the telelever arm or paralever pivot etc that need larger torque. I think what Tsiklonaut says is correct, buy both wrenches to cover the full range.

And yes, a torx bit set will be invaluable, nearly all fasteners on the BMWs are torx.

parts of the swing arm & paralever pivots need preloading to low 7Nm or thereabouts too.

Thanks guys, just want to get the right tools for when i arrive back and start my search for a late 1100gs or early 1150gs.

I will put Torx on the list - which sizes of the Torx will I need?

cheers

Dennis,

1150 brake bolts use Torx 45 but 1100 ones use allen headed bolts. You can buy semi pro torx and allen headed bits for £16 a set (7 per set) or £3 each.

As you probably know the torx come in a range with increments of 5. If you got a range from Torx 20 to 45 you would probably cover most things.

Thanks,

Will put it on the tool shopping list.

No hope I buy an 1150, otherwise the Torx bits get lonely.

cheers

Not sure about the 1150s but on my bike some things (paralever bolt, rear wheel bolts) are Torx size 50.

With the exception of a few fasteners, most of them are under 105 N.m or 77 lbf.ft.

A 3/8" wrnech that goes to 150 lbf.ft.??? I'd expect a 1/2" drive for that one.

You might consider three "quality" torque wrenches.

I have a 1/4" 200 lbf.in., a 3/8" 75 lbf.ft. and a 1/2" 250 lbf.ft.
All Snap-On. Buy once, buy quality. And they're all in calibration and stay in cal for years if handled properly.

Yes I know i made a typo, it's a 1/2" drive for that one. I am buying Caftsman stuff from Sears. For me a good mix of quality and the amount of use. And with the two Torque Wrenches I have a enough range to do the work.

Why would I need three. I doubt that there are many bolts on the bike needing more than 150 lb.ft/200Nm.

I agree.

Exactly as I've stated. I just happen to have three to cover any range I might come across. And when you get right down to it, you can maintain anything without them if you have "the feel".

well my feel has been fine on most work I've done till know. But there is to much steel bolts into soft alloy going on to trust my feel much longer. Did loads of work on K75s without Torque wrenches but it is time to get smart. And they are pretty affordable in Sears and a lot cheaper than having to "fix" something that went wrong.

cheers and thanks for all the info everyone, just bought the Torque Wrenches. Set me back 85$, great having President's Day sales, even if you don't like the guy.
